Got a tournament tomorrow, I was rigging some rods and looked down and seen about two inch puddle of oil under my lower unit. Will it hurt to run it or should I not go. What motor? Lots of people having issues with Mercury engine mounted tanks leaking and/or oil pumps leaking.Ask me how I know. LOL . The oil pump is usually a very minimal leak that will buildup in the lower cowling over time. If the tank is leaking, it will make a big mess in a short period of time. Better pull off the cowling and have a look.

It is a 2012 Mercury 250 Pro XS. I recently had lower unit serviced, may have put 3-5 hrs on since then.

Unless youre fishing a bass master elite series tournament I wouldnt risk it imho. What color is the oil? Could it be Lower unit lube like they didnt replace a seal properly? Oil and lube are the life of your engine. Unless you know for sure its not lower unit lube and you get water in there youre going to be buying another lower unit. Define if its gear lube or outboard oil. If its outboard oil run it, if it smells like gear lube get it fixed. Preventive medicine!

I cant tell which it is, but looks like it is coming from where the lower unit connects to rest of motor. I wouldnt think it would be gear oil that high up. What would cause outboard oil to leak from there.

So is it possible they overfilled the lu? And maybe vented it out the top.. a simple vacum test will be the way to go. Your mechanic can perform the task in only a few min. Theres an oil reservoir under the cowling…its the one that actually feeds the injectors that provide gas/oil mixture to the cylinders. The large tank in the bilge area pumps oil to that tank. Take the cowling off and see.Gear lube has a smell that is not like the 2 stroke oil in the reservoirs. If its gear oil, do NOT run it. If its gear oil, its either coming out of the drain hole/screw because it was not reinstalled properly, or from a seal on the prop shaft. I took the cowling off and couldnt see any leaks in there. I am going drop it off at my dealer next week. Maybe it will be something simple. Thanks for yalls advice, I will let you know what they have to say.
