Does the side imaging transducer that comes with the unit read high speeds or do you need to install 2 transducers one for high speed and the one that came with the unit?Where is the best place to attach the SI transducer in the back of the boat?Thanks

You will need to have two transducers, one mounted inside the hull (to read at high speeds) and the SI transducer mounted outside the hull. I recommend using a Transducer Shield and Saver bracket and attaching it to the side of the jackplate. Thats the way the factory mounted my 998 on my 14 PIV.Good luck!

It will require a Y cable also to connect the transducers to the unit. The unit will determine inside or outside transducers through the Y cable.

Appreciate the help. Does the Basscat store have the complete bracket “Shield Saver” to be able to mount the transducer to the jack plate?I only see the bottom bracket that would attach to the trolling motor. Thanks,

Yes, though there is a complex variation of plates for different mounting and often they are not labeled properly for the required mounting adapter. The rigging shop will have to be consulted with on the proper plate adapter. This will also require 1/4″ x 20 count threaded tap set and it is tedious to tap as popping (snapping) the tap off inside the hole is extremely easily done, which requires relocation and starting over.

As BCB stated, you will need a tap set to thread holes in the jackplate to bolt the Transducer Shield & Saver. My dad had a cheap set from Harbor Freight that worked fine. I have a Slidemaster jackplate and all you have to do, once you mark your mounting holes, is to remove the black plate by removing the 2 bolts. You then drill the designated hole size and use your tapping kit to thread the holes. All that has been posted is true. In reading your question you seemed confused about the SI transducer capabilities. It will not read SI images while boat is on plane. Although it does have a 2D transducer built in, it does not do a very good job, thus the need for the second 2D transducer..

IMO the TSS mount is not necessary and way overpriced. I used the supplied mount from Humminbird and mounted to the jackplate as seen in the pics. I get excellent SI readings and have not had a single problem. In addition using the Humminbird mount, the transducer will kick up if it were to hit anything.http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a3ce0 … /ry%3D400/

Smbass did you get the bracket from Basscat? I am installing a 998 on my boat this week and I know if I dont have some protection for the transducer I will replace mine at least once a year!
