What would you do ?

I have been saving $ for a HDS 8 w/structure scan to put in my console and was going to sale my LCX 27. Then a friend stopped by and threw a wrench in my plans !! He has two HB 1197si units less than a year old and he offered to sale me one for $1500. The only thing is having that big unit on a RAM mount vs HDS in the dash, and here in South La I dont need structure scan a lot. What would you do ?

Look on ebay. You can get a new HDS8 for around $1500 if thats what you want. I personally like the HDS units.

In South LA what will you do with a superior depth finder in either brand? No seriously you could use it. Mostly the GPS will be in use so let that dictate your decision some. However, the side scan will come in handier than you think in some situations. The are brush, rock piles and stumps that you could mark easily. Anything you fish underwater is able to be imaged and you will enjoy the Side Imaging feature more than you realize. You also can upgrade the 1197 for down scan software also. Ive had both brands of side imaging and currently run an HDS 10 and 7, with structure scan for both. Id leave the 27 in the dash and put the 1197 on a RAM mount. Youll love the big screen. Mike

I agree with Mike D. leave the LCX-27 in the dash and Ram mount the 1197si.

I have had the priveledge to fish with Ivan a bit this week and we have been putting the hds8 to the test on deep fish.I like both units but if yourwanting the unit at the console take the larger of the two.And you can get structure scan from hbird for free.I also think the birds are a little more user friendly.The hds8 isnt hard to run just have to open more screens to get what you want.Dont buy anything unless it is what you want.

Thanks Tx for reminding me of that I think Ill also get two talons on the back now !! LMAO. Has anyone heard of the HB units coming unplugged in rough water ?

I have used both units. I have never had an issue with the Bird coming unplugged in rough water. For side imaging I would go with Bird (No extra cost for SI and alot of places have the 1197 for $1999 right now). For fishing grassy lakes I would also go with the Bird ( The Lowrance locks up alot in grass). For deep structure fishing and “fishing off the graph” I would go with the Lowrance. The lowrance seems to have a crisper picture compared to the Bird. They are both great but decide which one suits your style…
