JUST PASSING ALONG A LITTLE INFO FOR MY BCB BROTHERS.I have developed bad cramps over the last 6-7 yrs.Fishing a tourn 5 yrs ago my hands began to cramp so bad that I could hardly drive ,must less hold arod. On the way to the lake I stopped at the marina store to get some bananas, orange juice for relief. Of course they had none, but an older gentleman in the store told me to buy a jar of dill pickles and drink the juice, I did an within 5 min my hands were good as new, kept them cold and we ate pickles thruout the day . Not only didnt have any more cramps that day , but we stayed hydrated in the hot MS sun. Since then I drink some juice on a regular basis, especially if cramps develope. Some of my ole fishing buds have picked up on my advice and do the same when fishing and they swear by this stuff. I found a sports drink called P J SPORT DRINK, tastes like dill pickle juice, it was developed by a former pro footballer in Dallas, we keep in our boats and use on aregular basis. You can get it at Academy Sports and some grocery stores or online at PICKLEPOWER.COM. Might not be your cup of tea, but if the need arises give it a try. GOOD FISHING–SAM !!!Last edited by SAMRUSH on March 29th, 2011, 12:30 am, edited 1 time in total.BAYOU BANDIT
I wonder if the salt in the pickle juice helps? I know guys that eat salt because of the reason.
Thanks for the tip Sam!
I would stick with the branded approved drink and not the jar of pickles unless adequate amounts of water are likewise consumed.Hypernatremia can melt your brain and give you seizuresThat is- “Too much salt can make you goto fittin and shakin and peein ons yourself”C.O.D. Jr. III
Dang, Ward, been doing that for years- peeing and such!!BAYOU BANDIT
Salt and sodium products are bad and depending on your physical make up and build could be extremely harmful. Definately not trying to hi-jack the post but if you are ever put in the hospital for dehydration they do not give you “sports-drinks” they make you drink Pedilyte. It is awesome, some of the flavors are an aquired taste ( not terrible, but defiantely not Jungle Juice) They have come now come out with the handy little packets that you rip and pour into a water bottle and some of those flavors are great. I like to dilute mine just a little, usually one packet to 20oz of water. I promise you , about 2 bottles of this with the addition of water throughout a South AR, LA, MS day… and you will feel like a champ. Oh yea pretty good to work out too much Friday and Saturday adult beverages as well!!

The best hydration and re-hydration is coconut water. It is natural and contains potassium, sodium, etc in correct combination. There are several brands but O.N.E. I find is best tasting. I keep them in the boat. You can get them by the case at Amazon. Interesting note: During the second world war when they ran low on blood plasma in the Pacific, they used coconut water as an IV blood volume replacement.
Now we have three medical professionals commenting on this post. Shows some validity on the how to approaches. Take your pick guys you have options.
Try having a debate with someone actually cramping up. Pickle juice works miracles in a pinch along with the obvious water. Old school V8 is also good depending on your taste prefferences. PJ is horrible but it did what it was supposed to one time while I rode a 100 mile bike ride in august. Both quads locked up as well as my calves intermittently. Im sure the hospital would have given me something different but I wasnt going to the hospital. Pickle juice and 50 miles later I finished my ride. I felt fine. No, I dont know crap for the medical science behind it.
