Factory? I didnt realize they put hydraulic steering in them back then. Yes, you should be able to check fluid level at any motor positiion. The design is such that the reservoir and pump are one unit and as the fluid is pumped into the lines to turn the motor fluid from the other line refills the reservoir. No matter where you have the motor the same amount of oil is displaced and replaced. The level should never change..
Yes, while we have ceased the upgrade on these units, you should contact Scott in Service at Bass Cat and see if your steering has the sleeved hoses. We suggest double sleeving and inspection of the hoses frequently. This was not on those 1996 units with Hydraulic and we suggest you see that yours has it.BCB870-481-5135
it does not take much oil to top it off. Words of advise. put a trash bag and a rag on the floor so if you over fill or drip it will not get on your carpet. I have seen guys get it on there carpet and it not only makes a mees it will eat the glue. Do not over fill. the housing gets hot in the sun the fluid expands and leaks out again messing up the carpet.
txmbass, we are suggesting that he contact BCB before trying to do any maintenance on this steering. We have a definite reason for his contacting us. BCB
Mike, you can add fluid to that fill tube till you see the fluid. If you have to add more than a few ounces, bleeding the steering might be necessary.
Thanks, Ill throw some in. Fished today up here in Montana and caught a group of hog fat pre spawn LMBs. Spring runoff is bad this year, dodged trees all day. Have had my BassCat 02 Jag for 12 months now and love it more every day. Mike
btrotter, you are looking for the Sea Star Pro series in the tilt steering for an older P2 model. That cylinder number is the HC5345 from memory, though you may want the HC5342 if yours is older. It offers more room and you can mount the pivot bracket back to the rear holes in the pivot assembly. We think there are four holes per side on the 5342 cylinder. You need a trim stop on the hydraulic steering set up, and that is a Mercury part also. It is a mercury switch on a bracket mounting inside the engine cowling. BCB
Since you are apparently not familiar with the system, that would be our standard suggestion. Obviously bleeding the system is the other option, and checking all of the fittings for leaks. There has to be one somewhere. BCB
I had this very same issue last year. Low on fluid. Had a leak develop in one of the fittings back by the engine. Had it replaced and no issue since.
I had a similar problem. I found my fluid was low. I added fluid then turned the steering wheel full left and full right a couple of times and that fixed it. Of course if your low on fluid you have a leak. (I did). This may very well be not the safest fix but I have had no more problems. My steering would jump (free) then catch again. Really was unnerving with the hammer down. ( the first time I noticed it)Good luck,BCC
The end caps become loose on mine and lost all of the fluid, so you might want to check yours to make sure they are tight!! Steers one minute , then not the next, on plane!!! puckery feeling for sure!!! lucky for me nothin bad happened!!! Took quite a awhile to get back to ramp!!!!!Pete
Thanks for all the responses.I am going to check the very basics…check the end caps, etc. Then Ill add the fluid if needed. If not successful, then Ill visit the friendly local Maytag repair man…he cant be too busy!
Teleflex Sea Star Pro with Kevlar hoses. HC 5342 cylinder for most. What seems to be your issue?
Had a club tournament this last week-end and had no problem running first thing in the am. But I did notice it felt a little jumpy when turning to the left and I notice it couple other outings prior to this week-end. Then we moved to another spot and I had a hard time steering the boat, I would have to turn several revolutions to the left to keep the boat straight. Ive read some previous post on the subject and I understand that a tech should check it but I just wanted an idea of what to expect and if the problem can be fixed w/o them selling me a new system. Weekend wasnt a total loss, caught 16.5 and big bass 5.88 Wilson lake, Kansas The old CAT can still catch fish!!!!!!!!
Nice weekend overall! The steering only relates to fluid. It is a swage pump system, with only a fluid flow through the helm as you rotate it. No fluid is no flow and air is no steering. Check the level of fluid, and try to determine if it is loosing fluid on the driveway when you apply lots of steering pressure to the helm. Dont worry as the steering only works on a few hundred pounds of pressure. Most often it is a small leak. Hydraulic Steerings have been in use since the mid to late 90s with some amount of volume. There was and remains a thought that they are safer than cable. They are less maintenance, though still have issues if not maintained. Try to look over everything on the ends of connections, fittings, hoses and elsewhere for leaks. Then try to figure out how much or if you need fluid also. Though if you have air in your system, there has to be a leak somewhere. BCB
