Transducer Help

I recevied my new Lowrance elite 7 unit last week . I got the unit installed according to the instalation book that lowrance gives you. The problem that Im having is I took the boat out today for the first time since install to try the unit out . When the boat got on-plane the unit quits reading depth it flashes 0-0 . The boat is a 1992 P2 and the ducer is mounted just even with the bottom of the transom. Also the unit has a built in GPS and the speed I think is off . The motor I have is a 1999 225 hp merc sportmax with a sportmaster foot . The spedo on boat says 62 mph at 5100 rpm but Gps says Im going 53 mph .. It feels like Im going alot faster than 53 mph.. Any suggestions on whats going on here.

The GPS speed is probably correct, I really dont think it is possible to be off if its picking up. You may have to install another trans ( shoot thru) , so it will read while running. A trans mounted under jack plate is out of water while on plane. Thats the way a bird is. Not sure bout the low.

So does all these new graphs ( Lowrance , Hummingbird etc.. ) loose bottom readings at any speeds ? If so what good are they ? I want to know what depths Im running in especially when lake levels are low. Im kinda new to this technolgy.

Mount a shoot thru hull transducer in the sump, plenty of “how tos” if you google it.

Each boat has a “sweet spot ” or an area of “smooth water” when the craft is running. The trick is to find that area so your transom gets as little disturbance as possible. Too bad no one has a “location guide” you can refer to when your installing a transducer Reminds me of being 16 in the back seat and trying to find that “sweet spot” in the dark. Looking at that picture, I have always mounted the transducer on the strake next to bunk that way it gets clean water, and I have always got a good read!!Pete

The transducer, if mounted outside, needs to be mounted like the picture in the directions. About 1/2 of transducer below the bottom of the boat. Mine is to the right of the pad and to the left of the trailer runner.I have the elite 7X and am getting a good reading at 60. Next week when vacation starts I will do a video and post for the non believers. After about 60 I rarely take my eyes off the water so I am not sure when it stops giving a good reading.
