Noisy Trim on Mercury

When I trim my motor down to the point where it slows down the trim makes a slight sqeak/squeal noise all the way to the bottom…. Anybody know how to get rid of this noise?? Its a 225 proXS 2005

There are two smaller rollers on the ends of the pump cylinders put some grease on the them, they can squeak and grind against the motor housing. This maybe be the issue it is common.

Mercurys are loud. Mine does that too but it always has. Gets pretty loud the final trim down. Its loud with the boat out of the water but with the motor running I think its good it is loud so you hear it. Unless this is a new noise louder than normal then something may be wrong.

I greased up the rollers and the noise hasnt changed a bit. It is definatley only during the trim at the bottom and only does it going down. Should the cylinders themselves be greased?

No, that should fix the noise. The little ball ends and put a little on the flats they ride on. Otherwise we dont have further input on noise that is a creaking type sound. It may take a few cycles to get lubricant into the pockets, though grease usually works. We have had to use oil on some that were neglected and the pockets were drier. BCB

Dont just put grease on the balls, ensure you rotate them. After they move put some more on and rotate them more. Also if the trim ram striker plates are grooved the can cause the balls to make noise. The striker plates are the little things held on by one nut that the rams contact. I just went through this on my 2005 250XS. I also added a couple (as in 3) drops of light weight oil to any areas that moved when trimming. Mine was only noisy going down and only after the small rams came in contact with the striker plates.Hope this helps!!

I think you are getting responses to two different questions. Lubing the ball ends of the rams will stop a clicking, popping sound as the balls rotate against the motor bracket–but the squealing sound at the end of the trim down cycle is just part of the system. Ive never had a Mercury that did not make that sound.Mike Whitten
