Stocking my new boat, have the bases covered to avoid a ticket with the fire extinguisher, throwable type IV – all except for the Coast Guard approved nighttime distress signal device – what do you guys use who also fish at night? I will not or should say really do not want to carry flares. Spent a lot of time looking on the internet, not finding Coast Guard approved products Thank you.Last edited by Engr6 on May 16th, 2009, 10:01 pm, edited 1 time in total.
You could get a good black max rechargable light to get someones attention that might be in the area. Our you could get a safety flare gun kit for about $115.00 at http://www.signal-flares.com , if you google safety flare guns or signal flare guns maybe you can find something a little more cost efficient.
Also forgot to add pyrotechnic devices are uscg approved for night destress. For more info go to http://www.uscgboating.org . I have the gun flare in mine that my company had updated and discarded and all i had to do was get new flares.
Depends on where you plan on going fishing. Flares are not required if not going out past the line of demarcation. (generally into the gulf or the ocean). If you do not wish to cary flares, the next best thing i can recommend is to get a stobe light from stearns, stobes can be seen very easily under night vision googles which is what we wear when doing SAR in the helicopters (USCG). The flashing light of a strobe will help tremondously in aiding people find you vs. looking at every light on the water. Other things, especially if fishing the great lakes or the mobile, california, lousiana delta would be a handheld radio as cell phones are pretty much useless down here. Always file a float plan (tell someone where you are fishing and when you are going to be home). I carry flares on my boat, fire extinguisher, a whistle in the life jackets and a chemlight in the pockets, and have a small blowhorn for my sound producing signal, throwable cushion, a paddle and a dirft sock.
A whistle like Jay mentions is a great safety device that is often overlooked. A good whistle is louder and easier to hear then your shouts. A mirror for day and a strobe for night are also good safety devices to carry in your PFD. Most of the traditional style PFDs will have pockets to store these devises. A good idea is to tether them to the vest so you dont loose them when pulling them out in a disress situation. Also, I stongly recommend you wear the traditional PFD and not the auto inflate kind. Although comfortable to wear, most do not keep up w/ the proper preventive maintenance on the vests. Do you really want your life to depend on your vest inflating on its own? If youre knocked uncontious and it doesnt inflate you are SOL. Plus the vest only counts as a CG approved PFD when worn and not when laying in your seat Your states boating requlation site will provide details on required equipment and will list what is approved and recommended for day and night use. Im glad to see the safety topic discussed on the boards. Jay and I have been on many searches where the proper use of safety equipment would have made all the difference. Good fishing – Richard
Cyalume light sticks are a good tool for some bad situations, as well as those emergency shake to charge flashlites, I also carry waterproof matches/lighter, zip ties, good multi tool, and plenty of rope ! D.
In addition to above small first aid kit batteries for your light source if you have meds that you MUST HAVE daily have some in the boat toilet paper or wet ones LOL in the winter dry clothes I always take PLENTY to drink in my cooler just in case I keep those shake up warmers in the boat all year I prefer a standard ladder to the E-ladder. If you are in doubt about getting back in your boat try getting all yur winter gear on when it warms up. Get a buddy to go out with you and see just how hard it is to get back in the boat with all that gear wet. tie your self to the boat and make sure your buddy is with you!!! This is why I have a standard life jacket that fits over all my winter gear for winter fishing! I have a auto inflate and may wear it if fishing with a friend. Good thread, all of us are only a second away from an accident.
