Gents, I have a 94 Eyra with Johnson 150 FastStrike – had it about 5 years and its been a great boat. Ive done many updates and upgrades and plan to keep it a while longer. Recently moved further south about 1,000 miles and decided to wait until I arrived to have it completely serviced – took it into a highly recommended Johnson shop. They say my lower unit was completely dry (have no idea when or how) and said we could roll the dice with new oil but they would recommend rebuilding lower unit – $1,000. I said OK (no idea when or if it has been done before). Then today he said upon further inspection the gears are in bad shape and they would not warrant any work unless I either 1. have them completely rebuilid for about $2,500 – 90 day warranty or 2. Have a refurbished unit installed for about $3,500 – 1 year warranty. I know I am missing a lot of detail here but was hoping some of the mindpower on this board could offer some advice. I hate to spend 3,5K on this if not needed but will if it is the right thing to do. Thanks.
