Yamaha 250SHO – Lower Unit Lube?

Howdy Folks.Ive got a new-to-me 2010 Jag w/ a 250 SHO. Its not quite due for maint. but I am going to do it all anyway since I want to know exactly how old all the fluids/filters are.I am likely going with the Yamalube Full Syn oil, yamaha filters & separator… but.. on the lower unit Im up-in-the-air a bit;I cant really find a definitive reccomendations or preference for lower unit lube online or at my local marina. Ive always run Amsoil Marine Gear Lube and have never had a problem. It appears to have similar formula to the mercury lube which I always liked as well (no-foam, works in 10% water etc). I was wondering if anyone has had any positive or negative experience with gear lubes for the lower unit in the 250SHO. Im leaning toward the Amsoil at this point, but Ive gotten some great feedback on this board before so I figured before I did it I would put a feeler out there to see if anyone had something to add to my thought process one way or another.Id be interested in your feedback on anything for that matter as it relates to the performance of the engine.Thanks.John H.

John, congrats with the new to your ride. That sounds like a beast of a boat. Why not use all OEM suggested products to be on the safe side. You cant go wrong doing that. Good luck and enjoy that boat. Also, love to see pics of your new boat too. Yep, invoking BassCat law #1. Show us your……. BOAT!

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/ap … etail.aspx This is what Yamaha suggests as their option, but their manuals etc leave it wide open and the description of this oil leads me to believe that its not made specifically for this engine so it probably is not any better than any other with a similar rating. The research continues for now.And yes, I hope to get a few pictures of the vessel this evening or tomorrow. Nice group of bronze bass I do agree that some oil companies have fantastic products and I am facing the same dilemma. I have one piece of advice I will pass along even though I have a feeling that Im preaching to the choir.Any time you change oil types or brands it is a good idea to flush the unit so there isnt an issue with different ingredients each company uses in their oils.In simple terms, one companies oil additives may be slightly acidic while the one your switching to is on the basic side. Mix the too and you get goo similar to the volcano science experiment you did in school.This is a bit of a simplistic view but when the oils are mixed this can happen.A quick fill and dump with the new fluid is usually all that is needed. There are some flush products out there as well. I had a Yamaha 250 HPDI for 6 seasons, and ran the Amsoil synthetic gear lube in the lower unit. It worked well for me, and I plan to use it in my new engine as well.
