Looking to buy several new rods during the off season and was wondering what most of you guys are using. Ive been eyeing those ethos “blue rods” at our local academy, but not sure about their durability. The reviews I have read seemed pretty positive, and the price is cheap for the components used.

Rod preference is opinion and everyone can say something different. I have found that there are many smaller custom rod makers with pricing near the BPS mass produced rod prices. You can get a beautifully made rod for a small price compared to the large rod makers. A quick survey of the net will give you a lot of sites to explore. The gentleman that makes my rods talks to you on the phone. He finds your use, handle preference, rod color, any personal decoration, etc.. All the small custom makers I have talked to work this way. As a guidance, his build with his top blank runs about $130. Good Luck!

I may have to look into getting a few customs built. Thanks..
Try a Kistler KLX, Dobyns Champion or go all out on a Kistler Z Bone or Dobyns Champion Extreme.
I live my Powell Rods.
Always strange to see people talking about buying $60 rods, asking about them, and everyone coming in and suggesting $200+ rods. I bet some didnt even read his post.Anyway, Ive never used any of those you asked about, but I have several shimano rods that run in that same price range and I like them a lot. Ive also picked up several skeet Reese micro eye rods for $40 on sale that I like too.My point is if you shop around sometimes you can find more expensive rods for the price of the cheaper ones. And Theres nothing wrong w/ picking up a few $60-100$ rods. I catch just as many fish on them as my buddy who spends $250 on 1 rod. A lot of the smalller builders buy their blanks from the Mudhole. You might go on-line and look at the Mudhole site. Then you have a better understanding of what you want them to build. I understand your point about price. When I stopped the tourneys and had to pay for rods, it was sticker shock. A LOT of very good sticks on here who pony up for top quality gear.
Lots of opinions on this topic. Nobody is totally correct, and none is totally correct. I have several multi-purpose custom made rods. When these were built, the custom made blanks costs less than the name brand blank. For example, Loomis came out with the IMX blank many years ago. When this blank came out, I could have a rod with the Loomis IMX blank for 100 less than buying it outright in the factory version. Not to mention it has my name on it, and it is wrapped in colors of choice.LOZman has a valid point here. In the long run, you get what you pay for. All of my custom rods are still functional. This includes the first one my wife gave me when we were dating in 1991. It is not quite as pretty as it was then, but that rod is still part of the regular arsenal. How many mass production rods can say this?
