I think I have a trailer solenoid problem. No reverse light but rest of lights work, cant back trailer, no power to red wire. Tried new 5 way plug. The only thing I did not do was apply direct power to the blue wire. To be honest I cant evev figure how to get it out even if I had a replacement. Is there a way I can bypass that switch so I can fish a tourney on Saturday????????????? Closest dealer is over an hour away in Florence AL, I am in Huntsville, anyway even if I got it there probably no way I will get it back by this weekend. Boat is a 07 Puma and I really hate that I have this problem with such a new rig. Somebody please help feel free to e mail to mbtb23@yahoo.com
I know in a pinch you can flip your vehicle wire conenction over so the spade part is sticking I believe in only 4 of the slots and turn your lights on this should power the trailer light and allow the brakes to release and you can back up. Then flip it back over to trailer where you need to do. I am sure BCB can explain it simpler…
If you have no reverse light, check your vehicle, and see if those work. It could be the five pin harness on the vehicle or the trailer. The use of hte brown wire pin to the blue wire pin on the trailer with the parking lights on will activate the solenoid. It is probably not the solenoid in this case, as there does not appear to be power from the vehicle. It is either joining harness or vehicle usually on these.
All is not lost even if your solenoid has failed. Use a large nut or the lock out tool to keep the brake from activating. Place behind the roller pin on the actuator. This will prevent the brakes from activating. Remove when not needing to back. Though, I too doubt your solenoid is the problem.
You should have received a brake lockout key for your trailer. While the coupler is pulled in the forward position, insert the key to fit. ( High lighted red in the photo) If you dont have a key, take any rigid metal that fits to size and insert in area so the coupler cant compress when backward force is applied. On another rig I owned, I placed a flat piece of metal in the slot on both sides where the key was to be placed and then to keep them in position, taped them in with electrical tape. Glynn
I had the same problem Saturday at a tournament. My truck back up light fuse was blown. Had a friend who has a pig-tail adapter that I could use to power the back up lights to release the brakes. I have had this happen about 4 months ago, local dealer said I must have the blue wire toughing metal some where on the boat trailer that is shorting out the truck fuse. yesterday, I did find a place that looked a little ???? so I wrapped it with tape, will see if this solves the problem. That would usually happen in the pivot tongue, if you use it frequently we have seen the wires get pinched.
I have to break mine everytime it goes into the garage. 5 years, by 45 weekends per year, that is 225 times it has been broked over plus throw in a few Tuesday tournaments, looks like well over 300 times. Probably have pinched a wire or two during this timeline. Ron
1. I did find a damagerd wire blue one yesterday I repaired it still does not work.(pinched it folding the tongue) 2. I can replace the trailer 5 pin female, I have not done that yet but I did replace the 5 pin plug on the truck. 3. The rest of lights including truck are working fine, so I never checked any fuses and I assumed the truck plug was fine because everything else worked. 4. I can run the blue power line to the solenoid and look for a cut but I dont know how to get to it so I can see the whole thing. 5. The lock out key worked enough to get it in the garage. Thank you 6. Applied power directly to reverse light and it works. Last thing are your trailers wired like this? 5 wires from plug yellow, brown, white, blue and green. Blue comes from 5 pin on the trailer and connects to blue from solenoid from there it turns red and goes to reverse light. According to multi meter one of the wires I forget which one has power applied to it all the time (brown I think) Thanks Marc
Question: If a wire is pinched vs being a bare wire in the tongue, what can be done about this??? I only found 1 wire that was partically bare and it was by a splice/tube wrap on the underside of the tongue close to some metal. I rewrapped it with black tape. Hope this is the problem as I could not see any bare wires inside the tongue where the tongue breaks. Ron
