I have had to do very little maintenance to my boat over the years. I want to stay on top of any possible service issues with the steering. Is there a post somewhere that might show me some of the general procedures like any oiling, greasing or bleeding procedures.. I am a 33 year mechanic so not worried about doing it, just want to follow close instructions.. Steering might have slight play and slight drag as I recall last year but very slight and just want to stay ahead of it. All other maintenance have been done to the boat aggressively including compressor belt, coils, pumps, plugs, batteries, additives, oils, greasing etc. etc… Thank you

If you want to do everything right, first thing to do is buy a service manual for your motor. Gives you all the tricks needed to do most anything. The steering cables certainly need lubrication. You might look up your specific steering helm number and you can probably find the manual for it for free online. Tells you what needs lubrication, what needs to be used, and also how to remove the slop by making the cables have a bit of tension between them.if you go to BBC, mercury fora have a FAQ. If you have another brand of motor you might look at those on bass boat central as well. For the mercs there is a FAQ that gives suggested annual maintenance.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

Thanks I am good with the motor.. have had manuals and code reader since I got it 7 or 8 years ago just looking for specifics for the steering.. all the writing is now worn off the sticker in the front . If I could find out details I am sure I can google it as wel.. Thanks for your help. .

Might I make a suggestion ?? — Go hydraulic on the steering . — Did it myself years ago on an 88 Pan2 , and Ill never go back to cables !! — Also have it on my current Kitty . — Hoss

When manually bleeding the trick is to turn the wheel very slow and it will prevent fluid frothing.

That is likely SeaStar with a separate fill on the console. The knob should have lettering.
