I put our boat (2009 puma FTD) on the trailer and my husband uses the winch to pull the boat the last bit until the bow touches the roller so we wont damage the bow. We have been doing this with no problems until …Yesterday the winch started making a popping noise and would not pull the boat up any further. We took boat back off to reload and winch worked until last few inches to bow roller then started popping again so I powered boat to roller. Is the normal for winch or is something wrong with it?
It is probably the strap cinching down, but why winch when you can power ? Place the trailer in the right position and just power up to the roller, then strap down, that is why theyre called “drive on” trailers ! D.
It may have something wrong with the winch, though the boat is a power up loading and not a winch up. The last few inches should power to bump, then the strap is just for tensioning. The lower roller is the strap roller, which it goes under the lower roller and holds the bow down. The winches main purpose is holding the boat and not moving it. Check the winch for lubrication which could be the popping, and speak with your dealer on the winch if that does not solve it. It should load to the bow stop on most ramps and the flatter vehicle area with angled ramps are the worst incidence. The flat ramps should load fine other than you have to back in excessively deep. And those traditional angled Corp style ramps usually work just fine. BCB
BCB – What type lub? White grease or something else? Thanks
Mine is doing the same thing, something in the drivetrain is slipping a gear. Mike
BCB may disagree, but personally Im not a big fan of the black rubber bow stop rollers that come on the trailers. I replaced the top one with one of the amber-colored hard plastic rollers, and while doing so, I spread the forks out sufficiently that the center section of the roller will freely rotate. Now when I power-load, as the bow encounters the roller, the center section rotates as I power on up —- no more nasty-looking rubber marks on my white hull! The winch strap is just used to secure the nose of the boat in place. BTW have you noticed the load limit specs on the side of the black winch cover. Could it be that when winching the boat up, you are exceeding the winch specs? C.
I have to winch mine up (Puma 250 Pro XS). The motor will not push the boat all the way up by itself. Ive owned a bunch of boats and this is the first one that want. Im running a 28 trophy with 1 plug removed. Hole shot is good and I have the boat dialed end where its hitting good top-end but it wont “rev up” to get on the trailer. Do I need to remove another plug? Im scared if I do it will start blowing out coming out of the hole.
HC, try putting your trailer in the water just a bit further or get you a Fury and it will go right up there without the winch. When I ran a Trophy I had to put the tailer in deeper than I do running a Fury.
I believe the sounds that you are hearing are from the gears some of which are partially stripped. look closely to see if they are worn down or missing. That happened to me earlier this year, first one ever after trailering for 25 years. I started using merc 24-c grease on the winch gears, seems to work pretty good.
Just a light oil will lubricate the assembly. If it is stripped, contact your dealership or service with your serial number if you are distanced from a dealer. BCB Admin.
