I had one on a previous boat, sure helped with the peace of mind when the boat was on the lift, 250 miles away. Just picked up a 2008 Cougar and thinking of adding one. Any thoughts / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. tnx! edwinAdvantages are taken, not handed out…
if it gives you peace of mind then you should do it.Last edited by PhilAddison on October 26th, 2009, 1:35 am, edited 1 time in total.
A 2008 Cougar should have a Security System on it also. The Locker Bar is a nice item, though they are a tough install on a BCB, and you have to watch the PVC for the wiring. BCB
I have one on my 2004 Cougar FTD, I had the dealer install it when I bought the boat so I cant be much help to you with it. I have the extra cross bar so that it can protect all of the boxes. Going from memory the holes are about 6-8″ back from the opening of the front storage box. The complicated part is where the gunnal meets the carpet is round so you have to put the holes alittle higher up then the LocRBar instructions want you to do. PS have fun drilling the holes in your boat.
Thanks for the replies. Given the contour from the deck on up the sides, it does look to be somewhat challenging. One thing I may look at doing is removing the 12v plugs on each side and using that spot to mount the device. The alarm system is definitely a plus. No worries about drilling holes…measure twice, drink a beer, and get to it!Advantages are taken, not handed out…
I have an older model boat but I added one to mine for peace of mind as well. I keep mine on a boat lift the majority of the time as well, but I do live where I keep my rig. BCBs has previously noted that even with loc-r-bars the boat can be broken into. It is not a 100% security system but I believe it does deter some would-be thieves. I was able to reach into my rod boxes and feel where the PVC that BCBs is refferring to is at. If you try to mount it as close to the deck as you can I believe you will be fine. I did the job myself. Just take it slow and easy and it should turn out well. Heres mine You might also want the adapter they sell to help keep the other storage compartments secure. The compartment immediately in front of my bar is the cooler so I didnt feel I needed to protect that. If they need a bottle of water they can help themselves. The good stuff is in the camp anyway. My previous boat had a Loc-R-Bar, but my 07 Puma does not. When I purchased, I asked about the Loc-R-Bar but my dealer said that he did not recommend one because of the proximity of the wiring. That recommendation did not bother me too much as my previous Loc-R-Bar experience was a little bit disappointing to me. On that previous boat I did a self-install and wound up making a measurement error that caused the Loc-R-Bar to have ~ 3/4″ of side to side play. Obviously that wouldnt do so I proceeded to look for a way to shorten the Loc-R-Bar so that the next set of holes would line up without having the side-to-side play. I wound up shortening the larger diameter bar using a common hacksaw with a bi-metal blade. That was the disappointment — if I could shorten the bar so easily using a hacksaw, couldnt a thief do the same. Now, I just be sure to take the rods and things out of the boat at night. I leave the rod box unlocked, but the alarm system armed so that a thief doesnt have to damage the rod box lid trying to get into it. Hopefully the alarm going off when he opens it will send him scurrying away. C.
I park as close to my room as possible, turn on the alarm, and make sure i have an extra mag for my .40cal.. Good luck. D.
The best locker bar was the Tackl-Saf in North Carolina. That company had the best system, though they went out of business for a variety or reasons. That bar could not be cut, and was hard to pull out due to the design of the front bar T that ran to the seat base. By far the safest bar. We fell the present Locker Bars are not as much a safeguard as they are a deterrent. In the case of a long term off public access area, we do understand that they would give a little piece of mind. Thanks for all the replies. This has me wondering about using the alarm for a couple week storage. Is there a rule of thumb that says “dont use the alarm if its going to be armed for xx weeks” ? Id hate to set it and come back to a dead crank battery. Thanks!Advantages are taken, not handed out…
