I need some help from the Classic and PII experts. I have a 06 Classic/200 Opti that I bought in July and I am running a 26 Fury. I have a problem with porpoising. The boat runs great until I get to 68 mph and then the porpoising starts. No trim angle will help except to trim down enough for the speed to drop below 68. I have run the jack plate at 3 1/4″ below the pad up to 2 1/4″ below the pad. At the higher jack plate height I can trim up to a point were the porpoising stops but the boat is very hard to turn and seems unstable. It also blows out very badly on takeoff and I do not like the way it feels at the higher spot. Has anyone else had this problem and what did they do about it? Thanks for all your help!Troy West
Ive got the same thing and just got the 26 Fury also. Will be awhile before I get it wet though. I and others will be interested to see how you make out. Think there are a few of us doing the same experiment so hopefully we can help each other out. Im sure Chris will have some input. He has done a lot of prop experimenting and will provide valuable advice. From what Ive read so far, the Fury likes to run a little deeper then the Trophy Plus and dropping the jack plate might address the porpoising. But Id wait for BCB, Chris, or others more experienced to chime in before making changes.
My P II would do the same thing with a 26 trophy and seemed to do it when I was tournament loaded with a lot of weight in the front and the livewell full. I run a hyd jack plate and could adjust it out but lost speed when I did so. I switched to a 26 tempest and it lifts the hull so much better and keeps it up on pad at wot. I passed a buddy this weekend on the river and he told me later that there was less boat touching the water than any he had ever seen and I wasnt running it hard when he saw me. What little bit that Ive been able to run the fury props I didnt have an issue buy I wasnt loaded heavy either. Try adjusting your plate to find a happy medium and put some solid pvs plugs in that fury and it may help your blowout. Also a lot of those heavy soft plastics, and lead products that you dont use that often but are afraid you may need one day so you dont take them out of the boat, move them to the rear compartments and get some weight out of the front of the boat.Let me know if I can help, ChrisP.S. the tempest does give it that on the edge almost unstable feel but thats what I like. If you remember the movie Days of Thunder “loose is fast”!!!! Its true if you can drive it loose.
Thanks for the replies guys. Chris, would you run the Tempest higher than the Fury? I have a 25 Tempest but it does not run very well on my boat. I will have to get a 26 Tempest from my friend to try. I would really like to get a hydraulic jack plate but Im not sure about the $1150.00 for the Detwiler. Will a hydraulic plate make that much difference? I am glad to hear that others are having a similar problem, I was hoping I did not have a problem with my hull. Thanks for all the help!Troy West
The 25 tempest will run 72 on my boat in the summer with a tourney load and be in the limiter. When I ran the 26 fury it would run the same numbers as my 26 tempest with a lower jackplate setting, but I didnt get to play with it as much as I would have liked too. Also Im about to the maximum topend speed that my gearcase is designed for though I didnt know it at the time so I will be testing a 26 fury and a 27 tempest this winter to see just how far I can push it. A hyd jackplate is wonderful for playing with setups, fishing skinny water, and rough water but once you get your setup dialed in a manual plate is fine.
My thanks too Chris. Someday I will get on the water and be doing this dance too. Hoooowwweeevvverrr, we are expecting 2 to 4″ of snow tomorrow. Seems this winter just wont give up. Not supposed to warm up again any day soon either. Ugh.
