i just bought a 06 p4 with a 200 merc…and i just stepped out off a 99 p3 with a 200 merc….the ride in my p4 is nothing like the ride in my p3 it is very rough and it is hard to steer…im told that my motor is to high, and im wondering how much or even if this efects the ride…just wondering are you guys with p4s impressed or what?thanks danielLast edited by trickwormD on April 22nd, 2008, 4:53 am, edited 1 time in total.
Yes, the motor height is effecting your ride, and the P4 is not the same hull as a P3 hull. It was made for a totally different ride. A P3 is a bow high ride, while a P4 is a flatter ride. The hole shot is flat and faster in a P4 where as a P3 is bow high and may take a while. The P4 cuts waves while a P3 can ride a long way in very large waves. The P4 does well up to 4 – 5 or so and is no challenge, whereas a P3 can tackle about any wave height inland waters will present for fishing circumstances. The P3 fishes bow risen some, while a P4 will float shallower and flatter as well. They really are two totally different aspects. Many long term BCB Owners have said they wished the P4 had the rear of a P3, with the bow of a P4. They also like the dual rear tanks. While Owners of other brands like the P4 as is. BCB
trickwormD, I came out of running “R” boats for several years to my very first experience with BCB, a 2006 PIV. The PIV will ride as well or better than any boat out there, even the larger ones in my opinion, but its all a factor of how you drive/run the boat. The PIV handles big rough water extremely well, although not while trying to cruise at WOT, but then again no boat does. Itll take some time to learn how your boat wants to hit that chop, where you need your outboard and tach running to roll over the waves but once you learn the particulars of your PIV, youll love the ride. It took me the better part of a year to learn how to run mine versus the heavier boats I was used to plowing with, but again, once you learn how to maneuver that boat, youll be impressed. If the steering is extremely hard, then you most likely do have the motor too high on the transom. I keep mine set where its got just a bit of tug to the wheel and then hardly ever trim it all the way up as just slightly below full trim gives me my best performance, i.e., 68 – 69 consistently with about 1/2 load, livewells empty. If Id get my prop cleaned up, I could squeeze another mph or two out of it as with a new 26P Trophy itll turn 71 – 72 with about 1/2 load.I think this hull is weight sensitive, mine seems to be. Having the saddle tanks full or empty makes a difference, having the livewells full makes a difference, every time you change the load in the boat by a couple hundred pounds, it changes how you drive it slightly, especially in rough water.Spend time running it and learn how she wants to be driven, youll like it.
I have an 06 P4 and love it but it will just take you some seat time to get the feel for it. The P4 likes to ride jack plate low you should see better numbers the lower you keep it mine is set about a 1/4 in from flush with a 26 Trophy. The best I have done with mine is 73 WOT by myself @ about 5600 rpm. The other thing that I have noticed is that it runs better with Trophy than the Tempest. The trophy handles the load alot better in my opinion, as stated above it does run flat with little bow rise. Just give it a chance and you will love it just as did the P3. Robbie
The one thing you will miss about your P3 is the throaty mid range throttle response and kickin top handling. You will like many other aspects of the P4 that will be fishing related.
