In the Stren series at lake Shasta, the co-angler side was won by a disabled vet confined to a wheelchair. The third day he fished with a friend of mine (Basscat owner). I was told by this friend that BCB and Northwest Marine (Jim Wells) is building him a special boat that he will be able to fish from as a boater. This was his first tournament ever. I understand that other brand Xs considered it, but did not want to get involved. Martin

Jim may be working on something, and we have considered a handicap product in the past. Though the investment has too small a market in an already narrow market niche. We have done some special things in the past to assist, such as grab rails and etc. We always try to be friendly to assist those with such needs and would like to be more able. Though cost verses return do limit that greatly. BCB

Disabled vets, I am not one, are especially close to my heart. I would agree that tooling up for a special boat would be expensive considering the market. I have seen handicap people fishing from pontoon boats designed to accomodate wheel chairs. Pontoon boats, because of horsepower, are not allowed in tournaments I have personally been involved with the DAV winter sports program here in Grand Junction. It involved down hill sking and sledding for paraplegics and quadraplegics. One of the off the mountain sports was trap and skeet. We actually had a totally blind man shooting skeet. We also had some that fished from a handicap pier. I have to tell you, it is something to see. I am trying to come up with an after market design to accommodate these people, so they can fish tournaments. I do know that there is a considerable amount of money out there in grants for the DAV. I am thinking a Bay Cat with some aftermarket mods to the forward deck. Remote trolling motor and grab rails. I am going to contact Jim Wells and see what and if he is doing anything. Martin

I fished a DAV Tournament up in Illinois about 6 years ago, where you take a Disabled Vet out in your boat, you wouldnt believe the things those guys can do, and they dont need much help, if they do, they will ask. “To Those Who Fought For It, Freedom Has A Flavor, The Protected Will Never Know”
