Folks, As part of our church outreach, we support the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home (www.veralloyd.org). The facility, originally founded in 1923 as the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home for Children, provides long-term residential care for boys and girls ages 8 to 18. Vera Lloyd provides an emergency shelter program for both girls and boys and has a specialty transition program to keep children from re-entering youth detention facilities. Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home is licensed by the Arkansas Department of Human Services and is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Vera Lloyd has the capacity to serve a maximum of 48 young people at any one time. In 2012, 228 young people were served by the home. Commonly needed items are sheets and pillow cases, towels, soap and personal care products. I learned last year, just before Christmas that the children there have few recreational opportunities. We discussed it as a family, my wife, Carolyn, and three girls, Elizabeth – 10, Anneliese – 8, and Madeleine – 4, and the girls decided that we needed to fulfill some of the Angel Tree wishes for the boys and girls. We were able to provide basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, and a volleyball set – two big sports bags of gear. When we delivered the stuff I found that the facility has a pond. It is a great pond, but they don’t have any fishing materials. I have contacted the Arkansas Game and Fish to get the pond stocked for a fishing derby – and thanks to AGFC we are all set for a derby on September 21st. Kind folks like Doug (dbasketman) and his family have agreed to attend the fishing derby and suggested that we have a cookout too, so plans are being made to have hamburgers and hotdogs afterward. I think it is important to support programs that give young people the chance to improve themselves. Fishing has provided many opportunities to me and my family and I want to share that experience with these young people. WHAT WE NEED Any assistance you may be able to provide would be most appreciated. I’m really looking for Zebco combos that can be used during the derby and then left for the kids to continue to use. I also need some catfish bait/supplies to leave with them as well. Finally, I need a few folks that can attend and show these kids what to do. If I may answer any questions regarding Vera Lloyd or the planned event, please contact me at your convenience. You can send me a message, respond to this or give me a call (five zero one – 454 – five eight three six). News from Zebco -They dont make any donations. They do have a Family Fishing program that offers somewhat reduced rates for equipment. Still looking for equipment and bait donations….
Checked on the SKLC participation, should hear back soon. (bait, etc) Also, I still have rods and reels from previous endeavors and cant think of a better use. I will get a count on them this week. They may require new line, but thats easy. Ill also work on hot dogs, buns, chips, etc,,,,,, Need drinks donated. Should get AGFC involved locally for prizes, educational material, etc,,, Fish tank ? Bass club assistance ?
We have a local church in our community that does something similar. Most of their supplies are donated by Bass Pro Shops. BPS has been very generous to them over the past couple of years with the gear that they have provided at no charge. You may want to make a call to them. Andy -Thanks for the tip. This is the first time we have tried this. Any help, ideas, or stuff is always welcome!John
Check with AGFC FOR POSSIBLE DONATIONS, IF YOU ARE TEACHING KIDS TO FISH THEY MIGHT MAKE A DONATION
It is so awesome to be associated with the folks at Strike King Lure Company, they are simply some of the finest people in the industry, and i love their products ! Here is what were gonna be fishing with at the derby !YEEEEHAAAAW !!!
I cant explain what a great gift this is to those kids. A huge thank you to Strike King and Doug who pulled this all together. John
Slowly coming together. Still need a variety of things. If you need a morning of service to remind you how lucky we all are, Id love to have folks come help! You would be amazed that most of these kids have never held a rod and reel. We absolutely will change that! When Im done each will have a Zebco rod, reel and tackle pack. If you want to sponsor a kid the Zebco kits are $10. I need about 40-45. John
I am very surprised that the folks at Zebco would not help you out. They did me but was quite a few years ago. I use to be a attend a camp for kids with cancer. Did this for 5 or 6 years and was my job to teach and fish with all of the kids. Was some where around 100 kids each year. Do not remember quite how many but think they donated about 20 or so reels to me and my cause. Have sense given most of them away or I would send those to you. Is a local bait company called Hatleys Cricket Ranch that use to donate all the crickets and red worms for us to use. Can still remember driving up the other side of Nashville and listening to 1000 or so crickets chirping the whole drive there. Good Luck
