I agree with smbass..reset defaults and retry. If it is only doing this in shallow water try turning the sensitivity down a little. If that is not the case then try another transducer if you have one. It could be is a bad transducer. Although rare to have a brand new one go bad so quick it is possible. Might be worth it to purchase a spare anyway, dont want one going out on you in a tournament. I run a 998 on the bow with the SI transducer on the foot of the trolling motor as the primary. The Minn Kota Fortrex I run has the built in Trasducer as a back up and I had BCB install a shoot through the hull Transducer at the bow as another spare. I also keep another in my truck with other spare stuff. I dont like to be without my electronics
Did the factory restore. Still a problem. Can someone tell where BCB mounts the front transducer? Its not mounted on my trolling motor. This may be a dumb question, but Ill chance it. :/Last edited by dmt1574 on July 2nd, 2011, 4:28 pm, edited 1 time in total.
That is located in the center of the boat just behind the Vee where the hull flattens out to give a straight shot.
I had two 700 series HBs on the Baycat that I had for a while. Both of them (797 & 787) did the same thing. I sent the 797 back to HB, they “fixed” it by updating software, or so they said. When I got it back, it did the same thing. Shortly after that, a guy on the BBC suggested I take the depth setting off of “auto” and select the depth manually. Once I did that, both depth finders would read the depth without jumping around all over the scale. Ive got a 997 and an 858 on my current boat (Cougar) and have not had that issue. Assuming that everything is good with your connections, transducer, etc, you might try that.

One thing to try would be if you have the same connection / unit on the console you can swap out the unit to see if it is the transducer. I had one go out on my 788c and it wound up being the transducer. Humminbird folks are great to work with.HBirdDeborahCRC.basscatowners
Thanks guys, good ideas! Very helpful!
Steve, By chance do you still have an copy of the older update to go back to? Just curious if has to do with the update itself.Gary
Try your bird setup menu, set NMEA output to “on”…..?
What Steve said… make sure your NMEA output in the Humminbird menu is set to “on.” AndyGreene Boat & MotorAndy Greene Greene Boat & Motor 828-286-2290 http://www.greeneboats.com
Yep, I did find the NMEA output set to “Off”.Thanks guysSteve “Gunz” Molina
Depth on front 778C is showing 1,000-1500 feet deep in a Lake thats around 40 at its deepest, new boat so nothing to do with wear and tear. Any suggestions?
Check your transducer, is it set-up for side-imaging??
Agree. Be sure to check that the SI function is enabled.
Go into the set up menu, and “restore factory defaults”. The unit will automatically default to the transducer that came with the unit, which is the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T. Where and how is your SI ducer mounted?? Has it worked before?
If your installation was an upgrade from a different Hbird unit, did you upgrade the transducer, also?
