I have a elite 7 chirp at the bow of my boat and when I have it on down imaging and I hit the trolling motor to move the boat forward it puts fuzzy stripes on the display as soon as I let off the power button it clears up, I am sure it is some kind of interference, I do have this transducer mounted in a transducer saver, has anyone else experienced this and if so how did you remedy it?Last edited by muddywaters on October 26th, 2016, 4:26 pm, edited 1 time in total.
I have the same on my Humminbird 1158. Youll hear lots of “fixes”. Im not sure what the exact fix is but maybe somebody can give you an idea.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
There are attempts to correct this but none are 100% last I checked. I believe the most successful remedy has been running a ground wire to the trolling motor somehow.Purchased new 5/4/15Bass Cat Sabre Vision EliteMercury Pro XS 150MotorGuide 75lb Tour EditionHumminbird – Stock (will be changing soon I hope)
This type of interference is tuff. Different things work on different setups and some never get resolved. There are alot of reading on the WEB about this. I fixed mine by cutting the ground between the dash and the bow.at this point I soldier another ground.at this point I know have one gound coming from the back but two going to the bow. One for the head unit one run down two the tranducer clamp. Actually found this researching the web.and looking at images of repairs. Never understood why they said to cut the ground at midship. Though it did stop all my interference. Bad thing about all the “FIXES” you will read about is “Its like rolling the dice” . No gurantees.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
There are dozens of suggestions and some we have ourselves been unable to resolve. The grounding inside the motor has been the most successful, double RF dampeners (chokes) on th power wires helps, some isolate the transducer from the motor. Todays units the DI versions are worse than sonar.
I just recently upgrated my bow unit to a HB Helix 7. I had ran my power directly to the battery, but started having similar interference issues, especially in shallow water. Hummingbird suggested to go to the sonar menu (advanced) and set the Noise Filter to HIGH3. That cleared mine up. They also had other suggestions, depending on yopur setup. Check the Lowrance site to see if they offer similar advise.
Chasing the source of interference like that can be very frustrating and there is not one common solution that fits everybody. It took me a couple of months to resolve it the first time I ran into the problem. Although I am familiar with HB, I imagine the Lowrance protocol should be similar. As mentioned above, there are many suggestions available, but you can start with simple things first, like software updating, direct wiring, isolating the cables, noise filter adjusting, checking the transducer cable for nicks, checking the fuse in the head (if newer Fortrex), and unhooking the battery charger before fishing. If none of these are successful, later on chokes, ferrite rings, grounds, etc. can be tried. Sometimes it will be a combination of some of these. I agree that it would be a good idea to put a post over on the Lowrance forum on BBC to get some direction.
Thanks for the input, I will start with the simple first and head for the complicated if simple dont resove the issue.
For what its worth, I had interference with an HDS up front, swapped to an Elite 7 and it cleared up almost completely. I havent tried swapping the same models (HDS for HDS or Elite for Elite) but maybe find a friend with the same unit and see if it changes any???Purchased new 5/4/15Bass Cat Sabre Vision EliteMercury Pro XS 150MotorGuide 75lb Tour EditionHumminbird – Stock (will be changing soon I hope)
I have the Elite 7 CHIRP on the front and the console. I ran 12 gauge wire from the bow back to the cranking battery and never had an issue. I ran my wires down the drivers side to keep them as far away as possible from the trolling motor cables. Wires next to each other, especially if parallel for a long distance can get interference from the electromagnetic fields emitted from the wires.
