I might be in the minority here but I do not like a cover that includes the motor. That is the only reason I have never owned an Aurora for a BCB. They are a fine cover and made extremely well but in my opinion they create a parachute effect and over time will do more damage to the motor cowling than just leaving it uncovered. That is the only reason I have a Deans cover and it isnt bad at all but they are a little more abrasive on the boat than the Aurora. They polish out fine however. Judd Lasiter
Actually, we have not seen more cowling damage with either cover, though on the newer plastic covers we would suggest a cotton terry towel to prevent abrasion marks. BCB
I have been using the Aurora with the motor cover for years and have not seen any cowling damage attributed to the cover (brush and sticks while fishing the heavy stuff), that includes 8 trips to the Owners Inv. from Houma, La. along with at least 3 trips a year to Toledo Bend, along with other trips up to Missouri over the years. And my cover is still going strong. This year I had to get a couple of the buckles changed out that broke from being used a lot. Some people say they are heavy, but in my opinion they are hard to beat, and once you have put it on and off a few times it is simple as can be.
I got an Aurora cover with my 91 Sabre and I used it on vacations and long trips and also when I wanted to protect my rods and etc. I had a cup made to fit the wind shield that I added, with extra material I got with the cover. Over the 17 years, I had two or three small patches sewn where the cover rode over the corner of my seats. I also re-water proofed it a couple of times with Walmart water proofing spray. I sold the boat in July and the cover went with it. I was impressed with the cover quality and lasting power. My motor did not show any abrasion wear from the cover and looked very good the day I sold the boat. My new boat has a new Aurora cover and I would be very happy to get the same wear with it. The only abrasion concern is on Mercs newer plastic cowling since the early 2000 models. Those do have some abrasion possible. The older painted cowlings are not of concern, nor are other brands. BCB
I plastic wrap my top cap and my cowel all the time before adding their covers. I used industrial grade shrink wrap – its worth the 10min it takes to get it on correct, to save the finish of a $40,000 boat and motor.
For what model boat, I have a custom made canvas cover for a cougar DC I would sell.
Cougar FTD DC 2008 – who made it?
Ive owned and used both and both have pros and cons. Ill give you my opinion. Towing – Deans only because it doesnt incorporate the engine cover. The parachute effect affects the top cap of the boat and not the engine cowl. Construction – Aurora Fade Resistant – Deans Waterproof – Deans Installation on boat – Deans Removal from boat – Aurora As you can see they are practically even when comparing.
I have a custom… but Im guessing most like the Deans??Dan Yonan. ———————————————————
There are many different covers out there with a lot of different prices. Deans and Aurora are top custom covers that will last for years, but they come with a price. You may save a little money by checking their web sites for left over covers.
I went with Deans only because I dont travel very far to fish and still I dont trailer the boat with cover on.
My used Jaguar came with a Aurora and its going on 10 years old and still in great shape. All it needed was cleaned and re-water proofed. Like BCB said….a good cover comes with a price but if you take the time to consider what you are trying to protect its a small price to pay.
Mine came with a Deans cover but I also got a Arura too. Ive never unrolled it, havent needed too. I do travle to fish but never with the cover on.
Ive used both and both have pros and cons. My opinion is that the Aurora is a better constructed cover made of better materials. It is easier to roll up and store and easier to put on than the Deans. The Deans cover is much better for traveling than the Aurora only due to the way it fits the boat. The Aurora is a “tent” style cover that catches the wind and will chafe the top cap of the boat even if tightened past tight and even if using celophane. The Deans cover is not a tent style cover, but seems to fit better overall. It too will cause chafing if you dont protect the cap with celophane, but celophane wrap works well. The Deans cover is lighter in weight, but let it become unfolded or unrolled and its a nightmare to install. Both are similar in price so there no advantage of one over the other here. If you want air tight, no rain inside, no worry about leakage after years of use, then Deans is the way to go. If you want breathable, then the Aurora is the way to go. My best suggestion is flip a coin and purchase the one that heads comes up on.
