2006 ProXs 225 had been running rough at idle and occasionally dying, so I took it in to a local shop. They said it had a fouled plug. I wasnt convinced, but thought I maybe got off lucky. Picked up the boat, took it out, and it ran fine for half a morning. Then on my way in after crushing smallies for a few hours, when I left my last spot i stepped on the hotfoot, and the motor would start to rev and try to get up on plane, then sputter and die. Did that a couple of times, then it was just dead dead and wouldnt start.Got towed to shore, back to the same shop. Two weeks later, they said they had it running great. Picked it up a couple of hours ago, put it in the water…it started up fine, warmed it up for about 5 minutes, then took off. Got up on plane, ran about 500 yards, then sputtered and died. Wouldnt start again. Back to the shop, and now I wait again. When I pump the primer bulb I can hear fuel moving but the bulb doesnt get as firm as I think it ought to. Anyone ever run into any issues like this? Any ideas? Im at the end of my rope. Ive lost an entire tournament season just about…our summers are short here in Minnesota and this one has been wasted. Very depressed right now.
In a related story, Im virtually certain this will knock my boat out of the North Star Bass Cats derby on Mille Lacs in a couple of weeks. If there are any MN BC owners looking for someone to fish the event with them, please let me know and Id be happy to jump in with you!
Sounds like a fuel line may be coming apart on the inside possibly. I know a guy that went through that last year. Shop would get it running fine on muffs. Sometimes it would run good for a half day or so before going down again. He put all new fuels on and its been good since. He cut open one of the old lines after replacing and flakes of rubber was coming off the inside which was stopping the fuel while he was running. Just a thought. Good luck with it, I know its frustrating.
MY Mercury 2006 250xs fuel lines were coming apart it was terrible i cut the one that goes from the primer bulb to the motor and i dont see how it even started their was little brittle pieces chocking the fuel flo down from the line seperating and coming apart. Took it to a friend of mine who is an ex Mercury mechanic he cleaned out the whole fuel system and installed all new lines and a new primer bulb and all was good to go. That was two years ago. Todays ethanol fuels will distroy your fuel lines. I use non ethanol fuel only since then. I Add Mercury quickleen & Yamaha ring to every tank.
What the two above said………fuel line and crap in the VST.
Well, heres hoping thats the issue. I will call and have them check that first thing. I have ALWAYS only run non-ethanol 91 octane in it, but I know the previous owner didnt. I appreciate the thoughts, and hope its the relatively simple fix suggested. Any other ideas while were at it?
Probably find something similar to what I found when I replaced my fuel lines.
I would have them decarb the engine while they r at it. 91 octane burns slower than 87. It will cause carbon build up in the Pro XS. I run 87 octane only. Mercury told me to run 87. 89 would be ok but to never run premium. In the Pro XS. The manuel says the same. Last edited by Mainliner61 on August 8th, 2015, 9:34 am, edited 1 time in total.
