Lake Vermilion??

Anyone know anything about this lake. Heading up there in a few days any info would help. Maybe things to watch out for, or some good areas to check out. thanks Allen

East end (Tower end) has the better smallie fishing. West end (Cook end) used to have some very good LM but they may have been mostly “relocated” due to most all big tournaments going out of the casino on the Tower end. Dock fishing is normally very strong on this lake but be courteous and watch out for the occasional psycho. That said, both this years NABC and last years (both held in Aug) were won deep with smallies. It took 20lbs this year (5 fish). I assume youre heading over for the Northern Divisional. Good luck. If you havent fished Vermilion before, enjoy. It is an awesome lake. 40,000 acres with 365 islands.

Thanks macsimus, Ive heard both smallmouth and largemouth can be good. We are launching out of the Casino. And yes for the northern divisional. Ill be in a newer orange and grey puma ftd.

Navigating out there is not difficult. Mapping is accurate and off shore shallow obstructions are well marked. Watch out for Muskies though! There are some monsters out there!

A tube is a good bait for the deeper smallies. Sorry, I dont have a color recommendation. The east end does have a lot of the invasive Rusty crayfish although there are other species present as well.

When you are talking about east and west do you mean how the lake is kind of split by a little river, or maybe you could call it a very narrow portion? And what can you tell me about the “reefs” on the lake? My paper map shows a bunch of them. Is it pretty safe to run?

East and West ends are separated by a long narrow called Oak Narrows (Timbuktu Marina area). Most of it is wide enough to run on plane. I believe there is one no-wake but it is not long. As Kent noted, the lake is very popular and the shallow reefs well-marked with hazard markers. I would still pay close attention to your map chip though especially when you get off the main travel routes. This Navionics map app is far superior to paper maps and I find it invaluable when studying a new lake before I get there: http://webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en#@1 … dcHj%7DprP It even shows most of the hazard markers.The east end of the lake is more open and more wind swept. The west end has more shallow bays with vegetation but those are generalizations.
