I have a 1995 Pantera II with a 1995 Mercury 200XRI. This past weekend I was loading up, and while cranking on the trailer winch my motor started trimming up and wouldnt stop unless I hit one of the trim down buttons. I have trim controls on the outboard, the throttle, and the up/down buttons on the bow. I had to hit the down trim until I got it where I wanted it for the trailer, then disconnected the battery. 2 days later I went to check everything out, and wasnt having the problem, everything was fine. Any idea what caused this, and what I can do to prevent it from happening again? Thanks!
The switch on the cowl might have gone bad. I had a motor do the same thing. The cowl switch was getting water in it and caused it to trim up on its own. Disconnected the switch and problem solved.
It often is water gettng into a trim switch, and most frequently the bow switch is the culprit. Were you fishing in the rain or take some water over the bow?
No rain and no water over the bow. Ive heard that about the bow though, and thought it was strange how it started acting up when I was cranking on the winch. Now Im wondering if it was the cowl switch. I let someone else drive the boat, and when they slowed down they just dropped the throttle suddenly and let water come in over the transom. I usually back it off gradually to keep water from coming over.
Check the trim wires at the forward, nuetral, reverse lever. The first tournament I fished after buying my 2001 sabre myself and partner were almost killed due to motor trimming all the way out of the water while running. That rocking from forward to reverse puts stress on the trim wire and has the potential to break them. Hope you get it fixed so you dont go on a wild ride like I did!
Do they make a water proof switch to go there? Seems like they would. Years back I had the same trouble. I decided to add another trim switch. And disconnect the one on the cowling. Back then I had heard the switchs give trouble. Actually a friend burned has trim motor up while he was driving down the rd.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury

That was back in the late 80,s. You are right! Know alot older and wiser as I like to say you live and you learn. My and his stays off if not in the water. Even on the newer model u would think the switches would be waterproof. A sealed switch. Not just own the motor but boat also. I hear of these switchs on motor and boat hanging all the time due too moisture.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
Its likely the trim relay under the motor cowling. I would check there firstSent from my SM-G900V using Yuku app
Does your Pantera have a up button and a down button separate up front are a single rocker/toggle switch. this sounds like a trim switch problem, either bow or motor. If you have the two buttons up front, chances are its the motor switch. Im assuming youre sure the trolling motor cable didnt lay against the up button to activate it.JohnJones Trolling Motor Services870 773 3474Motorguide/MinnKota/PowerPole/Lowrance/Humminbird
