For those of you who purchase Caracal with 225hp.What was your deciding factor? Why Caracal over Cougar with same 225hp?I have seen Cougar with almost the same item as Caracal, with Cougar being the same or lower pricing than Caracal. Thanks to all in advance for all your opinion.
I traded my CougarFTD/250ProXs for my Caracal. Mainly I wanted the wider front deck, plus I liked the deck layout better.
Floor plan was a factor in many of those who made a change. Plus its newer and that always intrigues minds.
It all boils down to personal preference and your list of priorities in a boat. I think the biggest purchasing a boat that is rigged with less than max HP is the resale value. The $2-3K you save on the front end will be negatively amplified on the back end. If you plan to keep the boat for a long time, I wouldnt be as afraid of it. If you were to buy a Cougar with a 225, you may want to go with the AE rather than the FTD, which will save you money on the front end and probably make it a little easier to sell on the tail end. In all reality, the Cougar AE is probably a little faster than the Caracal with the same motor, and the deck space is close to the same square footage, just different geometry. I really like the Caracal, but until you stand in one, you really cant appreciate how massive the bow area is. It would be nice for how I fish a few months out of the year, but maybe a little too big for the remainder of the year. Definitely something to take into consideration, depending on what boats you have owned in the past.
Thanks for the input
I chose the Caracal due to layout, wide deck and being a new model. I personally dont prefer the layout of the Cougar and if I didnt fish the Caracal would go with a Puma FTD. The local market is flooded with Pumas and Cougars, so I also chose to go with something that wouldnt have to compete with all the local boats when I resell it. After 4 months I am extremely pleased with the Caracal. The layout has been everything I desired and expected. I coach/assist a local collegiate fishing club so its not uncommon for me to have several fishing in my boat, so the spacious front deck was an easy choice. I came out of a 2011 Jaguar so its hard for me to evaluate the ride. It has handled the rough water very well, but still isnt a Jaguar. However it is more nimble than the Jaguar which has been handy in a few situations. The hole shot is average and I get a little over revving when I come out of the hole, havent addressed this issue yet. I have gotten 72 for top speed with a full load, 40+ gallons of fuel and 2 persons. I have friends with a Cougar and even borrowed one of my friends earlier in the year. As previously mentioned its all up to a personal preference. There was also a good point about not maxing the hp could harm your resale options if that is a concern.
In my opinion the Caracal does a lot of things well, Fishs great, Handles great, pretty fast, Can fit in my garage.
Beast of a deck…
I love the layout of my Caracal and the centered rod locker was a big item for me. It is my first basscat and first brand new boat. I am happy with it and have received a handful of comments on it from other brand owners so far. (I have just 20 hours on the Mercury)Also, it was a showroom boat that I really liked and my wife made sure we got it. It does make many other boats look rather narrow and I have been asked twice if it is a 21 footer.Dave.
Most everyone who sees my Caracal at the ramp or other places, always think its 20+.
