Trailer break noise

I started hearing a thump at takeoff and stopping. After some investigating of the break assembly in the tongue of the boat trailer, I observed the fluid was low. I added fluid to recommended level and worked several hours on and off attempting to work air out. While towing on the next trip, same noise. Do I need to bleed the break system like breaks on a car? I can work the break cylinder with my hand a few time and its gets hard to push, but if I continue to keep pressure it bleeds down slow. I know there is a dump solenoid in this system also, could it be bad and bleeding off slowly also? Has anyone ran into this problem before and have some insight that would help?

Not sure exactly what brake system you have. If you have a shock absorber in the tongue it may be bad. That would allow for things to bang around even after all the air has been bled.

Thanks 1stinLA. it was a long read but I some insight now. I think I have air in the fluid and lines. I will start by changing to new fluid and bleeding the system. If that doesnt stop the thumping Im going te tear into the cylinder and find the problem. I will keep everyone posted on my finds…

I had the exact same thumping noise taking off and coming to a stop on one of my trailers years back. It was the shock inside the UFP actuator.

I dont know what year your trailer is but I have had the metal brake line on the starboard side of my trailer fail twice and needed changing a bleeding.

Sorry it took so long to report what I found. I bleed the brake system, bleeding out all the old fluid and noticed some air in the system also. Next trip towing out to the lake was quite, no noise to report of.I think a simple bleed of the brakes without removing all the old fluid would have solved the problem.

The master went low for a reason !!! — If you have drum brakes , I highly suspect you need wheel cylinders . — Just for the safety factor , check the whole system to be sure . — Just my humble opinion . — Hoss

I checked the entire system and cant find any oil are damp sports. I purchased the boat in January so not sure what happened before I owned it. I did notice when I first got it I was backing up hill onto a slab that was elevated about 4 inches and when the trailer tires push up on the slab in push fluid out the break reservoir. Not sure what that was about.
