This did not happen to me or my BassCat. At the launch Sunday a guy with a Nitro and a 2001 150 Yamaha hat the motor stuck up. Had to be towed off the water. Had electrical to the motor, as he was able to start it easily. What causes this and what does one do if it happens?

In my Mercury there are two relay switches-one trims up and the other down. Ive had it happen where I trimmed down to plane out but couldnt trim up to run very well. Just replaced the $20 switch and all was well!

there is a screw that will releave the pressure on the trim unit and the motor will come down.

Trim relay. The UP or the DOWN can go out. Smacking it with a hard object can be a temporary fix, or you can swap the relays to get yourself home safely.

If youre in a bind, you can also bypass the relay with a jumper wire.

Where is the relay, I had to help a guy get his motor up last weekend but just undid the screw and hand lifted.

My old 94 Evenrude intruder had those go out all the time. Awesome motor and ran like a striped ape. But for whatever reason, relays would go bad. I just learned to keep a spare in the tool pouch I kept in the boat and one in the truck.

On some of the older motors you could raise the motor too high and it would stick in the raised position. The trim relays and motor are fine. It just needed the screw backed out to release the engine. Once it is down, retighten the screw and everything may be ok.
