When fishing I started up engine water temp got up to 120 so took off. after getting to spot shut down and fished. after 45 mins we moved could not get engine temp up past 90 -100. should I pull t – stats & check or should I drive 3 hours to dealer to check?? motor is not 1 year old yet and only has 5 hours on it???2014 Puma FTD 250 XS
I have had this happen to my Optimax twice already. I had small pieces of wood in my thermostats and they would not close. If you can do it yourself go ahead but you should know what you are doing. Mine is 2006 and I dont know if they are still the same but you might have to remove the fuel rails to get to the thermostats. It is not a 15 minute job but can be done. Your mechanic would probably charge 1.5 hours labor or more. Might be worth it to you to have it done.Everyone should believe in something. I believe Ill just go fishing!
What is water temp on the lake / river youre fishing?
Got bad T stat or chit stuck in T stat. Motor not getting up to temp! Bad, Bad, Bad! Wouldnt run till corrected or might seize the sucker up. Under warranty, have closest certified Merc guy check.
Yes pull the t-stats, regardless of water temp your opti should be able to achieve 115- preferably 120 degrees at idle. Now when running youll see significantly lower lower temps in cooler/cold water due to the poppet valve taking over the cooling of the engine, not the t stats. Warranty does not cover removing and inspecting t-stats unless they are actually found to be faulty, but they need to be removed in order to be inspected. It really a very simple job to check the T-stats and soething as small as a grain of sand can keep them open enough to not allow the temp to come up to idle. You will need to back the two nuts off the fuel rails, but before doing so, make sure you relieve the pressure from the schrader valve on the side of the PORT fuel rail first, then the one on the top of the starboard side. just back the nuts off enough to allow enough room for the t stat cover to be removed once you get the bolts out. Inspect clean and re-assembly the thermostat. It is highly recommended to have two new gaskets on hand before doing this, ive pulled them many times and have not had a gasket tear yet, but it surely will happen when you dont have a spare. Actually heres the directions from Don, it is a very very simple process, just make sure you put some oil on the injector orings, and torque the rail rail properly. Its about a 10 minute job once you do it a few times.http://www.bbcboards.net/mercury-3-lite … stion.html

This is one more example of why everyone should be able to see their water temperature to verify proper thermostat operation and to know that their motor is not being run cold. This is good information and JSLAW has provided an excellent post and link on this.Everyone should believe in something. I believe Ill just go fishing!
I agree. I never realized the thermos get as clogged as they do. Once I installed the Merc monitor, it can tell you exactly when one gets clogged by the way the engine temp warms up and cools down. I have to unclog at least one of my thermos 6-8 times a year. Merc monitor also has an alarm that tells you a thermo is acting up. They are worth the money and I will never spend $$$$$$ on a 200-250 HP motor without having one installed.
After following the post from Don , I found in both t-stats small rock chips and small pebbles. I put both t stats in a cup and poured hot water in till the t stat opened. then flushed out all pebbles . I then took a toothbrush and finished cleaning them. If u own a outboard u better learn this . Will save u big bucks!!2014 Puma FTD 250 XS
Mine done the same thing today. Im very disappointed that this happens as easily as it does. Had a tournament after a hard rain so the water was muddy. What do you do if you are 40 miles from the ramp and one sticks open? Luckily it didnt happen then but I took my wife and kids out today after church and it never would heat up so we couldnt go anywhere. My kids were heart broken.
