Battery Charging Question..

Hey guys….have a question about how to treat the batteries. Ive got a 2002 Pantera III with the factory 3 bank charger. My last boat I had a newer Minn Kota digital charger and left it plugged in all the time. Should I do that with this older charger as well or do you guys just leave them plugged in until they are charged after use? The charger in the boat tends to hum a little louder than Im used to so was curious. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Shouldnt leave any of them plugged in all the time. If stored long term like here in the north east, best to plug it in for 24 hours or so once a week to keep batteries topped off. Make sure batteries are topped off with distilled water if have fill batteries before storing for the winter.

I no longer leave it plugged in 24/7 as I have read about the occasional, although very rare, instance of fire. I plug mine in overnight after fishing, and then top it off the night before my next trip, which, during fishing season is always less than a week.

I concur with the 2 previous posts , and I feel for you guys when you say fishing ” season ” . — I just spent last weekend on the lake with 70 degree temps. — Although that isnt normal for N . Arkansas , we can still fish year round , so Im counting my blessings . — Hoss

I always envy you fellows who can fish open water all year long.

The manufacture say “hook it up, plug it in and forget it”. My long time friend suggest I drive 180 miles round trip after work on Friday to plug it in so the batteries will be charged when I get there Saturday. Do you live where the boat is stored, as in your garage, or is your boat a long drive from home? Mine has been plugged in for close to 40 years.

Saw several suggest using a timer to periodically switch the charger on during winter storage on another board. i have always left it plugged in on my last two boats (in FL, so no winter storage) without issues, but the thought of a fire, however remote the possibility, has me thinking I might change. Im out of town a fair bit more now also so that makes me maybe a little more nervous about it.
