Im thinking about putting a new unit on the bow of my boat. I have been looking at the Lowrance Elite-7 HDI and the and the Humminbird 859 CI HD. I wanted to know if there has been any issues with using a unit that has a internal GPS antenna vs using an external GPS antenna. I know there was some issues using an internal GPS antenna when the unit was down in the recessed well but mine is raised above the gunnel. Any information would be appreciated.Thanks,Mike

I have had no problem with my HB internal GPS unit at the bow.

Biggest issue to me is:Do I want it linked to console unit? If so they gotta matchInterference between HB unit and fortrex units can be really problematic(although I got lucky both times).C.O.D. Jr. III

I can only speak for Birds. The refresh rate for mapping is just as fast now on the internal as the external. One of the differences is at very slow speeds, below .5 miles per hour. On the internal unit at these speeds, you lose the heading sensor which shows which direction the boat is headed. You will just see the donut. With the external unit, you will still see the arrow indicating boat direction at these very slow speeds. One of the advantages of an external antenna is that you can position it close to the transducer, which makes it easier to position your boat directly over the structure seeing as the waypoint has been saved to the area of the antenna. This is more important with the dash unit. And of course, install is easier with internal antenna.

Thanks everybody. I appreciate your taking the time to weigh in on the subject. An internal antenna on the front of the boat make a much cleaner installation so I was hoping there hadnt been any issues with that style unit.Thanks,Mike
