Direct Wiring Hummingbirds Question

I have read that I need to direct wire the Hummingbird units with 14 gauge wire to eliminate the low voltage message . 2001 Classic. How should I route the wire to the front unit? Also do I also need to run a direct ground wire or can i just ground to the existing ground wire?

I fished wires along the port side walls. My boat has a round removable plastic cap on the port side near where co-angler stores rods. I used a plumbers fish tape to get to the back bilge area behind the port gas tank (my boat has rear tanks). Once I got wires to the round plastic cap I pushed them into the rod locker and on up to the front where I have a hole for wires near the nose. I clipped them up high in the rod locker so it wouldnt tangle with rods.I ran a hot and ground wire since doing two wires was as easy as one wire. It stopped low voltage and cutting off.

Ive been wondering if I need to do this on my 14 PII, been getting the low voltage message since it was new. Ill be installing a 999 HDSI unit soon. bass1958- You just wired the units up directly hot and negative, with an inline fuse? Do you bypass the main power switch at the console and the breaker switch at the battery?cadmoving- Sorry to hijack.

A 2014 boat should not have low voltage unless they have a fault in the battery. The boat have had a 10 gauge main harness tithe dash for the past several years. If there is a low voltage signal we suspect a 24 series cranking battery. It is possible there are other issues though that is just needing to find the issue. We would run new wiring down the starboard (right for landlubbers) of the gunnel and come from the terminal block itself, should there be need to be upgraded. More often than not we go back to the battery itself.

Yes, I bypassed the main power switch and put an inline fuse. The only reason I went on the port side, as opposed to the starboard, was for ease of access with the round plastic removable cap there. There is a small gap opening at the top of the rod locker that was easy to fish the wires into.
