Hey all, where can an Arizona boy go fishing in the Fort Lauterdale, Fl. area? Im going to be working here for the next 6 months and was hoping to get some fishing in on my time off.DESERTDWELLER.COM “GET YOUR BASS IN THE BOAT”
I know you boys aint much on maps,,,,, but big O looks pretty close to me ! Sounds FUN !
First things first, do you have a boat with you? If you do like dbasketman said the big O is an hour away! I was in the Fort Lauderdale area with my lady friend in October I did not have my boat…. I still managed to catch some good ones. Okeechobee is tough if you dont have a boat… You can rent a boat but bank fishing is pretty tough on the big O. There is no shortage of ponds and lakes in south Florida. I rented a small Jon Boat at everglades national park west of Lauderdale about 30 minutes. It was also a blast but hard getting used to a boat without a trolling motor. I ended up having my GF run the 10hp Yamaha to troll me around while I fished. Heck even Walmarts in south florida have ponds in the parking lots. I just drove around and looked for ponds in the neighborhoods that didnt have no fishing signs posted, and that werent obviously private property. Markham park outside of Weston has some neat small lakes that have good fish. Good luck and enjoy the beautiful south Florida weather! KipOh and if you have a boat the sky is the limit! You can go to Miami and fish the canals and catch peacocks! Big O is an hour away!!! Did I mention the big O is an hour away?!
StickMarsh shouldnt be far. My “big” trip this year will be there the last week of February. There are lots of lakes in that area. Watch for gators.
Doug, your way too funny. Where we go in Az we dont need maps. Weve been there a thousand times before. There are only 5 descent lakes to choose from.I am still boatless as some of you know. Its been 5 years now since we attended the our last OI. Definitely boat less here in Florida. I just got back here from the holiday and hunting at home. I brought my reels and a selection of lures. Picking up a pole or two this weekend. I will be shore fishing for a while then maybe rent a boat for a day or maybe even a guided trip somewhere. I have missed the last five years of fishing and now Im in Florida for a while and I need to do some “catching” up. If any body will be around and need a back seater, Im off on weekends. Thanks for all the information guys. Ill keep you posted on my adventures.DESERTDWELLER.COM “GET YOUR BASS IN THE BOAT”
Okeechobee is by far one of the best fisheries in the country right now. Buy a 5 HP engine at a garage sale, pick up a 14 flat bottom in the paper and get a $200 troller used somewhere. Go fish Okeechobee! If you have to screw a piece of plywood on the bow for a self made deck. But go and go often!
Boy I would love to pick something up but i have a dilemma, 1. Im staying in a hotel (not too secure for a boat) 2. I have no way to transport a boat (my given rental is a KIA). Id need to rent something on the water. A skiff would be awesome.Last edited by AzDesDweller on December 5th, 2014, 4:21 am, edited 2 times in total.DESERTDWELLER.COM “GET YOUR BASS IN THE BOAT”
I wont be availble till the mid to late Dec, though Ill be headed to the lake quite a bit over the last two weeks of Dec. Send me your info and im sure i can get you on the lake for a day. If your looking to get out and wet a line, go to holiday park (take Griffin road due west till it ends in the everglades), it has boat rental in the everglades, they are skiffs but will work for wetting a line, and the Everglades is full of 2-3 lb fish with occasional 5,6,7. Jolly roger Marine up on Lake O has rentals as well. In the meantime tournament season is beginning here and there will be plenty of ABA events (draw format 1st sunday of the month/ and BFLs on lake O in the next 3 months that you could always fish as a co angler to get out on the water. To get to Big O- Take 595 to US27, go north for 50 minutes to clewiston, jolly roger marine is on the right just before you go over the small bridge into clewiston. Or hire a guide out of Roland martins marina, just after you go over that brodge into clewisto bang a right at the 1st stop light, this will bring you to Rolands and Mary martins marina.
Jason, that would be awesome. It looks like the company is going to send me home to Az for Christmas on Dec 18th and bring me back on Dec 29th. Im game if that works out for you. Ill send you my info, if it works out, great, if not, no worries. Ill try the other options as well. Looks like this project is going to go into August 2015 so I will have other opportunities to get a line wet. Id love to pick up a back seat for a tourney or two.DESERTDWELLER.COM “GET YOUR BASS IN THE BOAT”
I did Stick Marsh last year, and would not do it again with my equipment. Fishing was good once you learn your way around, but you have to very careful on the water, lots of cypress stumps just under the surface. The real problem with Stick Marsh is the road in, it is a six mile dirt washboard with a fine dust like Ive never seen before. I cannot overstate how bad the dust and washboard are. Just a heads up.
