Last week at 50 hours I had a coil pack go out, 07 Puma with an 07 250 Pro XS. Long story short, it happened the evening before a 2 day T so I got hosed since the nearest mechanic with the part was 2hours away. Get back into town after the T, which I fished with only an idle speed for 2 days, and its fixed ASAP, no fault to the dealer. The boat was taken on a 5 day trip with no problems, the sixth time the boat was run during a pre fish at another lake, I get the Guardian alarm and the thing states the ignition coil is not working properly. Luckily Im only a couple of miles from the ramp,AGAIN, and I contact my mechanic. From the phone conversation the mechanic believes Im about to drop another coil pack, given the assumption which wont be determined till tomorrow when I bring the boat in to the shop, this sucks. He also informed me another boat that was bought roughly at the same time, same 250 Pro XS, dropped 3 coil packs in a row, but hasnt had a problem in 4-5 months. Another guy that bought another boat with a 250 Pro XS at roughly the same time has dropped 1 coil pack. Im not pretending to be mechanically inclined when it come to this stuff, but what the hell is going on? Ive got another 2 day T with a 2 day prefish schedule, but I cant even go more than a couple miles from the ramp without worrying about engine failure! Anybody having the same problem? I had a Yamaha for 7 years and ran the crap out of it and never had a hiccup, not being able to run any where confidently even if it is fixed is a bunch of crap. The boat has been great, the motor is pissing me off! Im probably going to borrow my buddys Champ this weekend since its a do or die state team qualification for me, frustrated!
Never a problem with a coil over the 2-3 years that Ive owned a Pro XS. There are some faulty coils out there, but the replacements should be good. Maybe theres more than a coil problem with yours that the mechanic is overlooking?
This came up here a couple weeks back, as we do know of a few incidences with 250 pro XS engines on coils in the 07 range, though there is no model year on Merc. engines now. There are not that many by comparison to the number or engines out there. It is a component failure from a vendor, and we understand that the situation was addressed with that vendor. We think they are working through it, though it would be suggested to replace all the coils when one drops. Warranty at Mercury might not agree though.
Update. It turned out to be a “crank/ ignition sensor?”, it had a very light oil haze on it that wasnt permitting a good contact. The sensor was cleaned and it ran great for 4 days. The dealer was great and fixed it asap. I apologize if I got a little heated, but I was frustrated after having to fish the prior T at idle speed. I did make the state team so it worked out and the boat was a hit with the locals since there arent too many Cats out here yet. I was told if there is another coil issue they would all be replaced, fair enough. Sorry for the venting, love the boat, crossing my fingers on the motor, but i love it when she runs.
The electrical gremlins will get their lunch ate soon and you hopefully can put them on a diet. BCB
Does anyone know if Mercury has any plans on a recall on the coil packs. I have talk to a few people and the coil packs have gone out on there 250 Pro XS engines.
The instances are so low in comparison and we understand that they identified and they feel confident it is fairly isolated. We do not see a recall on the coils forthcoming. BCB
