I picked up this 2002 P3 with a 2002 Optimax (reman. powerhead in April – long story) in April and have had it out several times. Any help with the below questions would be greatly appreciated.Setup – I ran it a couple of weekends ago with a 26P Trophy – Air Temp ~ 90 – 5450 rpms – 70.3 GPS. Trimmed to rooster tail at top of cowling. Light load – Me, 25 gallons of fuel, livewells empty, light tackle load. Gets out of the hole a bit slow when full fuel and livewells(4 seconds to plane). Any suggestions on changing the set up? Looking for quicker out of the hole and maybe a few more miles top end. I have a 25P Tempest Plus that I havent tried out yet. Also, I noticed these small stress cracks a few months back, they are located on the starboard side under the Basscat decal. Any ideas what they are from?…there are some on the trailer fender just below them and there isnt another crack on the boat or trailer anywhere. I have ran around in some pretty nasty waves with this boat, but they havent seemed to affect anything. There are no marks or gouges anywhere near these on the bottom or side. They are just enough to hang a finger nail. Are these cracks anything to be concerned with? Thanks!
Id throw the Tempest on and see how she does. It may turn it a little easier especially with in the hot weather. Those top marks you have look to uniform to be stress cracks. Almost looks like a circular pad had some grit on it or something.
Doubt a pad with circular motion? Maybe wrong?(no fine scratches) but I would love to see RPs explanation of the forces required to make such an even CIRCULAR pattern…hard to picture perpendicular forces to generate such even circles- something had to spin the gelcoat right there in a tight circle while travelling down the side of the boat without scratching the surface- spinning water? huh?Regardless both are minor “flesh wounds” that I would hardly think indicate any real structural issues(per BCB review). The fender one is from jumping on back of fender step getting things out of boat. I got an all silver boat to avoid worrying about some of these things.Last edited by clownshoes on September 1st, 2011, 3:52 am, edited 1 time in total.C.O.D. Jr. III
Give the 25 Tempest a run for sure.I had a 2000 PIII with a 200 Opti.I switched from the trophy to a Tempest, both being 25p.The tempest was much quicker out of the hole and It was about a mile and hour better on the top end.Ran it with all large PVS plugs.Set up was 3.25″ below pad with that prop.I then switched to a 24p Fury with even better all around results. You will have to play around with the setup until you get it to where you like it.Good luck!
The hull is a glancing impact of the outside of the hull. This is a common area as that area could contact a stump sideways while idling in a radius. If it hits as the boat is sliding in the water idling, that would be the result. Yes you can read any crack to the origin. On a 2002 those were the Vinyl Ester resin and that stuff was pure D Tuff! The fender cracks are hard to read from just that picture, though fenders take a lot of abuse usually. That is in the rear step pad area and the cracks are in line, though we need more to read them. In a short it appear something came down on the step area and flexed the fender. BCB
Thats a great looking boat youve got there tab! Put that 25 tempest on there and let her eat I think youll like the results!
How is the Trophy set up? PVS vents?.. Seal Ring? A 25p may also be your better option.
Thanks for the compliments and info…I will post some info on the prop with a pic later tonight.Any ideas what a top speed on a P3 with a 200 Opti? Not wanting to set any records, but just gauging how close I am to optimum. I have read this model runs nose high and that makes it fun to drive. Hot foot to the floor and trim it up and she lifts off!
The best number I saw with my PIII was just shy of 72,I ran my rig pretty heavy. It will also depend on your setup, and this time of year where you live. The heat and humidity will hold it back a bit. When the weather cools this fall you will see better numbers. The PIII is a awesome rig, have fun with it!
Thats sharp, love the silver boot.
