since i got the boat back out in february my trolling motor has been acting up. it started out feeling like it has heavy grass on prop. today it ran soradic and would start and stop without my foot on pedal or on the switch. checked connecrions, all tight. 24 volts at receptical. turns freely but it could be bearing. bugt i think it is some other electrical prob. or possible brushes. anyone else experianced this? or anyone got a clue?

Dads having a similar problem with his 02 Motorguide. With his, it will only go at full speed or nothing. He suspects an electronic issue in the head, but any input would be appreciated here as well.

Probably dead spot on armature where copper wires are soldered to it. That happened to my mk. Mech spot soldered all the wires on armature

probably the armature and will be an expensive repair or time for a new one.

Look up electric motor repair in local yellow pages. If you have a shop in town they could tell you the problem, and could probably fix it. I had a motor go out and got it fixed for under $75 and it ran better than it ever had.

It could be rewound, though not many shops rewind in todays disposable world.

Pull the prop off and remove one of the hex head bolts to see if water has entered the motor. Exact same symptoms and This is what happened to mine, water in the motor. Give Jones Trolling Motor Services as call and they will give you a heads up on the possible problem, great people and free advice.Last edited by Devoreflyer on April 29th, 2013, 2:51 am, edited 1 time in total.

would start and stop without my foot on pedal or on the switch if this is in fact a accurate description then you have an issue at the foot control itself. The motor itself is switched controlled from the pedal, meaning the load. windings isnt going to cause that description.

Yep, hes right! Those older Motorguide trollers used the Mercury foot pedal from years back. Those have a small switch to turn on and off under the flapper. The switch was upgraded to a micro switch that produces much less moisture problems. Another fact is stowing, years ago we stowed the pedal toe up as designed and informed by old Motorguide directions. Today it is suggested toe downtown prevent moisture from entering the backside of the switch while traveling.

I too think it is the foot switch. Its on an 05 PIV. 8 years old Im going to try a new switch first. Then go from there. But I am going to talk to someone in the profession before I start changing parts. Lucky for me my father n law owns an electric motor shop.
