It seems everything I have been reading as of late on hotrod motors is people are going to the Yamaha. I just had a buddy that has a Stroker pull his 2.5 hotrod Merc X motor off and replace it with a Hydrotec phase III 250HPDI. My question is this…why/how can the Yamahas be modded and Hydrotec are doing it but yet no one is modding the Mercs? My buddy specifically said he wouldve stuck with Merc but they didnt have anyone really pumping the new motors up and they couldnt hang with a Hydrotec Hammer. By the way this thing is running north of 110 mph Judd Lasiter

Judd, Im no expert on this subject, but I do know that it is a Federal offense to make powerhead or fuel system/exhaust mods to a stock outboard, UNLESS it is to be used solely for racing. Hopping up and engine for bassboats/tournaments is not legal, based on what Ive read. Plus, the Optimax technology is a lot harder to “mod” than the old EFI engines. For what it is worth, the ONLY Merc I ever blew up was a 200EFI on my first Pantera II—I messed with reeds, heads and compression and had a bad boy–till it puked piston parts through the exhaust hub! Hey judd go to screamandfly.com, simmons does stuff for the Opti-pops, and also Brucato soes Merc stuff…..Hydrotec at times has not even eaten up the factory warrantys at certain situations…..They have the new HPDI getting over 370hp on the full out Phase 3, and I believe your talking about “Kurts” 100% Kevlar Stroker, that boat is sick…..Go to yourtube.com and watch him throw an Ear on a 107mph gps run…….Pretty killer boats……Your Signature …

Hey Judd, How you been? There are several reputable shops doing hop up work on The newer mercs. Simmons motorsports is probably at the head of the pack as Bworner stated. But, noone is modding the mercs and maintaining the reliability like the Worthys at Hydrotech are with the Yamahas. I know of a couple of Modded Yamis they did around here and they are definatley bad boys. Now if you want to mod an older efi merc such as mine, there are plenty of options. There is a shop in Arkansas that has been turning out some real mean 260s. Atleast they were 260s when they got there. I dont know what they are cranking out now. I would have to strongly consider sending mine to him if I needed a rebuild. I just cant remember the shop name off hand. Why noone has really come to the forefront with the Mercury tuning is a mystery to me. Maybe its just that mercury does the most they can with them at the factory and without sacrificing reliability you just cant get much more out of them. I mean hey, youve got to modify Yamahas to make them run with the mercs out of the box right???? 110 mph is nuts. Ive gone 94 in a fishing boat and that was scary fast!!
