I noticed the last couple of trips that I have been taking on some water in the bilge so today I pulled the boat out in the drive and ran the water hose in the bilge to see if I could find the leak. It appeared to be leaking around the drain plug. I pulled the plug and the drain tube was very corroded. I started to just clean the corrosion off but the tube had deteriorated so much that I actually went ahead and removed it since almost half of it was corroded away. Im keeping my fingers crossed that there is no transom damage. Ive going to leave a fan blowing in the bilge for a few days to make sure everything is dried out then check the drain tube hole for wood rot. Provided there is no damage, should I have another tube put in or Ive seen some boats with a threaded brass plug called a Garboard plug. Would that work? The other thing is, when I ran water in the bilge I tested my bilge pumps. The automatic pump worked but when switched to manual nothing happened. I Pulled the manual bilge pump and it works straight off a battery but I have no power going to it from the switch. The automatic bilge pump and all other pumps works fine. I dont see any fuses anywhere. I have the BP100 electronic dash. Where do I look now?
You could use a threaded plug if the holes line up and and you seal it properly. If not, a dealer will more than likely have to resleeve it as there is a flaring tool to get it to fit properly. Sounds like the dash bilge switch is bad from what you describe. You can unhook it and allow it to reset but it sounds like you have narrowed it down the the dash. Unfortunately, that dash is discountinued and you have to replace it with this: http://www.basscatstore.com/index.asp?P … ProdID=618 If that is the only thing wrong with the dash at this point I would probably just put a toggle switch under the dash for it. If more things go wrong with the dash then I would replace with the link above. Good luck on the water damage, I hope you found it quick enough. Judd Lasiter
The dash uses a ground only to turn on the bilge through the auto. There is no power going to the float, it just reads the contact. The Dash turns both pumps on through the same wire. It may be internal on the BP dash though we would dig deeper. And Judds suggestion would be another option there.
Also you need to replace that drain tube with another one crimped in there. The transom does not have direct contact to the rear sump board, so you should be fine. Battery gasses corrode the drain tubes and they do it quickly.
Did some more testing on the bilge pump and Im still confused as to the problem. Automatic pump works when I lift the float swith and when I switch to manual. Manual pump didnt work in either position. I found that if I ran another ground to the manual pump it would work, but it also comes on in “auto” mode when I lift the float switch. Since the pumps are on different grounds, does this mean they both share the same “hot” wire? Are both pumps supposed to work in auto and manual modes?Last edited by Alabass on August 17th, 2008, 6:44 pm, edited 2 times in total.
I believe so. I am not sure on one that year model but if you have to pumps and need water out of the boat I would want to get it out of there as quickly as possible. JL
The pumps share hot leads and ground on this set up. If they are working on the auto, then they should work manual. Unless there is an internal issue. BCB
Ive got a 95 pantera II also, and mine started the same problems with the areators. I checked all the ground and hot wires. I called Basscat and talked with a guy named Bobby, I think, and he walked me through several things to try. Finally I decided to go with the new dash. With Bobbys help over the phone I got it in and I havent another problem since. I think it would be in your best interest to go ahead and get a new dash.
Ok, thanks. Both pumps do work in “Auto” as well as “Manual” mode. I just wanted to make sure thats the way they were supposed to work.
