I have begun to notice a “thump” every time I accelerate away from a stopped position with my trailer. It is a 2010 trailer, with dual axle brakes. What I think Im feeling is the brake actuator sliding into a fully extended position, after it compresses when stopped. It is more an annoyance than anything else, but I wanted to see if anyone else has the same situation.Just had the fluid level in the brake reservoir checked by a mechanic, and it was OK. This seems to be a change, as I dont remember it doing this when brand new.Thanks for any help or thoughts.Mike Whitten

Ive had this happen twice on my 05 trailer. First time the shock in the actuator had to be replaced and the second is when I broke a brake line and had no fluid.

The actuator is a small shock that slips into the coupler and dampens the front and rear travel. They are not a common issue, though can be a problem in limited situations. You can see the actuator if you get under the coupler and look up from the bottom. It will be simple to see the replacement pattern on the shock there.

If you look at the book on your brakes, you will see the shock, and also instructions on disassembly of the coupler. It is pretty easy to figure out.

Where do you get the book on the trailer brakes and such? Is that on the home page?

I bought a 2007 P4 this spring and my trailer has done this from the get go. The times that is is most noticeable is after a hard to moderate hard stop. On a soft stop you dont feel the “thump”. I observed that on a hard stop the actuator will be about half way back. On a normal or soft stop it will be fully forward.

Cape Fear, the brakes work like the older systems in vehicles. If you have air in the lines then you have some pedal slop. Older folks here will remember brakes on cars/trucks before Vacuum assist and Boosters. The pedal connected to the master cylinder direct, and this is the same system on your trailer fundamentally. Many will remember the pulsing, thumping, soft pedal or hard pedal and return of those older vehicles. We suspect you have a little air in the lines there. BCB

You can go to the UFP website and get all the part numbers, maintenance, etc. for the trailer parts. I replaced an actuator on a 2000 trailer no problem, easy to do! http://www.ufpnet.com/Actuators/tabid/54/Default.aspx
