Im going to take my Lowrance 522 out of my dash mount and put in a Humminbird 997 I got from a pal. I plan on putting a plate of some sort over the hole, then mounting the bird to the plate either with a Ram mount or just the mount that comes with it. Are there some inexpensive plexiglass type materials I can cut, paint and use? Help a brother out.

Have you checked out the Sherm mounts?

Search around on Google and you will see some images of Sherms mounts. I actually ordered one today for an HDS 8 that Im mounting on my P2. They look really nice and people speak highly of them.

Try this company hopefully you have one near you. http://www.tapplastics.com They even cut while you wait. I just happened to go there today for some King Plastics Starboard. I was in and out in ten minutes. If you want it flush mounted you make a template with cardboard or styrofoam board or just take the measurements and go in and get it. There are videos on you tube on how you can fill the hole in. Good Luck
