I have an 06 Merc XR6 and I bought it new last year in March of 07. I have noticed a problem starting the motor. It just does not want to start. I try choking it, not choking it, and everything else inbetween. I have to put it in Neutral and open the throttle up to get it to start. When I first bought it I just thought it had to be me not starting it correctly. Then the ring or outer fitting where the ignition is was lose and pulled out alittle. It was just enough for it not to choke the motor when I started it, but I fixed that by just tightening it back. Here are my steps for starting my motor: 1st I pump the primer bulb untill hard. 2nd I lower the trim to put the motor into the water. 3rd I push the key inside and hold for a few seconds, then turn it to start it. And all I get is this turn over sound and wont catch. Then it will make a sound like your car makes when the starter is not working. Any ideas?
Then it will make a sound like your car makes when the starter is not working. Any ideas? Hmm. Could it be your starter. Im not sure, but you might be on track with your diagnosis. Just couldnt help but wonder. Hope you get your problem fixed. KentKent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax
I agree with Kent. Also, the XR6s are cold natured beasts but will run and run good once you get that initial start up past ya. I would normally do what you do but I would turn the key on as my buddy backed me down the ramp and then as the motor hit the water hit it with a high idle then when it fires up back off on the high idle. She will smoke like no other but that is normal for the first time in the morning…especially if it is cold outside. I would get someone else to listen to the starter cuz if it aint grabbin that could be your problem. Judd Lasiter
Is it turning over and not starting? Or is it not turning over at all and you only hear the solenoid clicking? If the starter is not engaging, then it is probably a battery connection loose. If it is not starting and is turning over thenit it is hard to say. Double check the ignition safety switch. It is common to leave the lanyard pulled by accident. Otherwise there are lots of variables.
Are you holding the key in and turning at the same time? Thats what you are supposed to do right! Anybody! Help! Glynn
Its really weird because sometimes it turns over and over and over but just wont start. Other times it just makes a noise like a bad car starter. And yes I press the key in while turning it. Then I will put it in neutral and high idle and it sometimes turns over quickly and sometimes it takes a couple of tries. It is very aggravating fishing on a river with alot of boat traffic and current pushing you back into shallow water. I have to keep my trolling motor down just in case I cant start it quick enough. The motor does not have alot of hours on it at all.
It may be easier to have the carbs checked by your Merc dealer.
I also had an XR6 and it was difficult to crank, until I finally learned the sequence of events to get it to fire easily. I see that youve pumped the bulb to be sure its tight. Next, youve got to hold in (push in on) the key for at least 10 seconds with the choke opened up as well. I used to count (1) Mississippi, (2) Mississippi, etc. The reason I did that is because if I tried to crank it too soon, it was a real pain in the tail to get cranked, but if I followed this sequence, I had no problem at all……assuming your starter is working. If Im not mistaken, in the owners manual, it says to choke and hold in on the key a minimum of ( seconds before you try and start the motor. I found that a little longer made it much easier. It feels like forever when youre doing it, but I found that that is what it would take. Mine was a 94 Merc 150 XR6.
cb2 is correct on that sequence for older engines as they had a fuel primer assembly. Todays later models dont have that same fuel system, though on an older XR it is the proper procedure. BCB
My old one would flood easily, and when it did i would have to tilt the engine to extreme heights so the carbs would spill out and then trim level and would spin over and start.
