I could use a little prop advice if you please. This is for a 2001 Jaguar with a 225 Opti. Currently running a 25p Fury with decent results. With a full load (2 people, full gear, both tanks full of gas) Holeshot is Very Good, mid-range is very good-excellent. Top end is 72-74mph but on the limiter 5750rpm. Prop to pad is 3.5″ low at holeshot and raised to 2.5″ below once on plane. Per the advice on another board of the resident prop expert, I tried the new 26p Razor3. Holeshot was poor, mid-range was good, topend was off the limiter at 5650rpm but slower @ 71mph. I could have dickered with the PVS plugs and jp height to work on the holeshot, but since it kept blowing out anyway I just abandoned the Razor3. The Razor3guy has offered to add a little cup to it at no charge, but Im too ignorant to know if that is what I need to do vs the good performance of the Fury. A buddy calculated my slip and came up with 5% on the 25 Fury, and I assume that is pretty good. My question is this: Shouldnt I just try a 26 Fury to get the WOT rpms off the limiter? If so, how much holeshot would I be sacrificing? Mid-range?? I also read where one guy moved from a 25 Fury to a 26 and lost 400 rpms?? I know the cats seem to need a little different prop set-ups vs the other guys, so Id like to tap into the expertise here on this board. Thanks!
You can try to have your 25 fury reworked, just tell them what it is your trying to acheive and they should be able to make your currrent prop work for you. I truly believe the 25 fury on your setup is the right prop, though you could also try a 26 tempest or 26 trophy, though i think you would not be happy with those. Have a little bit of pitch or cup added to your fury, make sure no PVS plugs are installed and run it about 3 inches below pad and you should be good.
Our suggestion is to wait on summer and be sure you have a full load. Then verify the results you have posted.
I should have mentioned that the above results were on a reactor lake and in 80 degree water, 80 degree air temp. I plan on using the 25p during the heat of summer if the new prop isnt ideal for HOT weather
I have a 99 Jag with a 225 Opti that was Gov. Huckabees boat. I have the build papers from the factory and it came witha 23″ Tempest Plus. It still has a 23″ Tempest Plus so I assume it is the same prop. I am 3 inches below the pad and it runs72 loaded on my GPS at 5760. It will just bump the rev limiter every now and then. I tried a 24 Trophy and could only turnit 4800 rpms. I dont think I could run a 25″ pitch prop and get near as good a ride and performance.Johnny
TXUex, thats a pretty cool history on that boat. Now whenever I hear Huck on the radio, Ill think of him as a fellow Jag owner! It sounds as if our Optis are running on the opposite extremes of the spectrum. The performance of the 25 Fury seems as if my boat is marginally under-propped by a half-pitch.
I wonder if your boat being a 2001 is lighter than my boat. Your boat has no wood in it, so the composite could be a littlelighter. If it is just say 200 lbs. lighter that could make a lot of difference. Thats weight you would not have to lift thereforeit should run a little higher in the water.Johnny
I have had great luck on my Jag running a 25P Turbo OT4…….Holeshot is great, top end respectable at just over 72mph and it handles great and stays flat in rough water…..
Sounds to me like the set-up you have may be just right !
**Update** Ran the 26 Fury today, and that seems to be the prop for this rig. Holeshot was still pretty good, mid-range was less, but still good. Topend was where this prop shone. Got the rpms off the limiter. Threw an “extra heavy” load (2 guys, 2 full tanks, every piece of tackle I own, buddys tackle, drinks and ice filling the cooler, and livewells full) on the boat, and still reached 73.7 @ 5550-5650 RPM. The boat also seemed a little easier to drive. When trying to find the sweet spot, I was even able to get this prop to hit the limiter if I raised the engine to 2″ below pad with 16 PSI WP. Air temp was 82 today. I may keep the 25 for whenever air temps exceed 95 or so. Thanks for all of the advice!
