I have a 2012 Margay with an Optimax 150 Pro XS. I have swapped the Laser II prop that came on the boat with a Tempest Plus 25 pitch. I have raised the 8″ jackplate whereby the prop shaft is now exactly 3.5 inches below pad. The boat runs 44 mph at WOT with the motor trimmed up to 3.5 on my Smartcraft gauge. Water pressure is fine at between 12 and 15 PSI. 4400 rpms.My question is this: I have read threads by a number of guys that have the exact setup. They are running over 60 mph. How high can I go with the trim (looking for a number)?Should the motor be higher, meaning less than 3.5 below the pad?Had the boat 6 months and still cant get it right. Holeshot is great, so is acceleration. Just cant get the rpms and speed higher. I am not going to try another prop. As I said, other guys with the same setup are flying. How high a trim level is deemed “safe”?Thanks. I really need to ice this issue.CraigLast edited by cjrich on November 29th, 2014, 9:18 pm, edited 1 time in total.
I have a 2014 Margay with a 150 XR6 running 64mph, wot at 5200. Have a 4blade Solas HR Titan 23″ but I still have nose plow at low speeds. I guessing you need to raise your jackplate to 3″ below pad. I had a 25″Tempest on this boat at 1st but never could run enough rpms.
With the 4blade need very little trim
25 seems like a lot of prop….but good holeshot …hmmmmm… Is it a 150 ? (Post said 1560) . The reason I ask is I have a Sabre w/150 opti and run 63 @ 5700 rpms…and it has great holeshot also…
Optimax 150 Pro XSThe boat goes 0-30 in about 4 or 5 seconds
That setup should fly then ….do you have a hotfoot on it ? It almost sounds like an engine related issue…That should be a 65 mph rig , at least
This probably isnt the case but just throwing it out there. A friend of mine bought a new Ranger with a 200 SHO on it and could only run mid 40s. He took it back and his throttle cable was out of adjustment. After the adjustment, he was in the mid 60s.
I raised the engine another one-half inch and NOW took a more accurate reading — its correctly 3.5″ above the prop shaft.Im going out tomorrow on Lake Eufaula. I will raise the engine one more time if its still not dialed in. Then Ill put the Laser II 23 pitch back on just to see how that does. The boat ran 50 mph at 5000 rpm with the Laser II, but as is said … this rig should fly. I will also trim up more. I traded a Ranger 619 DVS ( boat was like driving a tank) with an Optimax 200 for this boat, and am still getting used to the importance of the trim with the Bass Cat. My previous boat would have been next to impossible to spin out and I never had to worry about such issues. Will then have the throttle checked. if I have to purchase another prop I will hunt for a Fury 24.Thank you all for the feedback. Anyone else, please chime in.Elevation is not an issue. I live in Columbus, GA. I do have a hotfoot.Last edited by cjrich on November 30th, 2014, 12:51 am, edited 3 times in total.
Its pretty easy to check the throttle. Just screw the stop in some. Its a bolt that is double nutted behind the hot foot.
Phil,So the position of the bolt determines how far the pedal can be depressed? If so, thats sound pretty simple to adjust, thus allowing “more”gas”, if you will.
Bass Cat Boats,Thanks so much for your time in explaining all of this to me.I will raise 1/4 ” and run the boat again next weekend.
I run the 24 fury in Alabama on my 14 Margay. I have the slight right torque that you want and am regularly seeing 68-69mph by myself running right around 5800 rpm at wot. I have adjusted my engine height several times to get it in the sweet spot. Once you get your engine at the right height and get the right prop its all in the trim. You can overtrim or undertrim it at wot and it will cost you 5mph either way. When Im running near 70 I have a short rooster tail, slightly shorter than the top of the cowling. If you are ever over this way I would be happy to meet you at the ramp and let you try the 24 fury.P.S. I also have the large size vent plugs on my fury. Basscat put them in there at the factory and they definetely knew what they are doing.Last edited by Aaron Owens on December 1st, 2014, 6:32 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Very sweet. Youve sure got it dialed in.Thanks for the offer about trying the prop. I am in Columbus, about 3 hours away.
You will get it figured out soon enough…I saw where you posted that you did hit 60, so you are already getting close. Basscats have really unique hulls and definitely take some getting used to, especially if you have only run other brands in the past.
