I fished a tournament on dardnelle friday and everyone i seen on the lake was throwing it, I dont blame them or mean to offend anyone and i prob should throw em, but i got 2nd with my trusty old jig and only used one hook for one fish at a time. I just dont see how why these havent been outlawed in tounraments yet, I mean its like people arent into fishing anymore because they enjoy it they are just out to win. I mean maybe i need to get a tuna stick and tie a trotline to it with 50 swimbaits. The line has gotta be drawn somewhere. I am aware that there is another side who loves em and not everyone like to fish the same, but its like you cant compete with the dang things. It is eventually going to come down to people who dont throw them will have to stop fishing tournaments. I know that seems extreme, but its coming to that with me, and i doubt im the only one. The funny thing is you read get 5 and noone claims to be throwing them but just go back to the strip pits on tournament day and tell me what you see, but none the less i lost by 0.5 with my jig and i was tickled with that, especiallty since i havent fished that lake much and we had big bass a 3.5 lb kentucky. It was slow we only had 8 bites all day and winning sack was only 13.6 we had 13.1.
Just wait, just wait… Regulations are only beginning and this will change. Much like TN approached the umbrella rig, with wide ranging regulations.
First off congradulations on your second place finish. Second I was asked my opinion on the umbrella type rigs by a Bass Club President the other day. I gave him what I thought in my opinion was best for all. Only allow one hook bareing lure of your choice on the rig, whether it be one crankbait with three treble hooks or one swimbait with a single hook. The other wires would have to be rigged in any manner, with any lures you wish(hooks removed). My thoughts are to protect our fisheries, while not limiting the free market. My thoughts- banning the A RIG is the most ridiculous thoughts Ive heard in a long time. If youve watched the TX won on the rig, 90% of the time they are just catching one fish at a time, I know the possibility of more is there, but not the usual catch. Why not tell BERKELEY that their baits are illegal because they are better than live bait or it makes the fish hold on to a worm for 18 sec more than others-and we all know they do work. Why not tell BASSCAT that their boats are not legal, because they get to fish faster than other brands- an unfair advantage. The A Rig will be like the SLUGGO rage, SINKO rage ,reels that will not backlash ,Big-O craze, etc. The A Rig is harder to throw and just will not suit some of us and has not proven to be detrimental to any fisheries. Just ease up and see what comes out of this craze.SAMhBAYOU BANDIT
All respect Sam, there is presently no data on the impact to fisheries. The rig is only a few months in popularity and we have seen nothing like the Alabama rig since the Big O craze or Lunker Lure. The impact is greatly increased in catch volume over these baits. We probably have never seen anything as impactive. On several lakes this time of year you can catch good stringers of fish on winter patterns. Some are catching over 100 fish a day now with about 30% being keepers, with bama rigs, on days that traditional methods produce a limit. It has quietly dominated the competitive scene more than anyone cares to tell or realize.Last edited by Bass Cat Boats on December 25th, 2011, 11:52 pm, edited 1 time in total.
i heard that someone had a five fish limit of smallmouth weighing 19lb with 1 cast with the a-rig
We must look at the big picture of game fishing and protect what we have. The amount of attention we see here on the boards is miniscule compared to what is actually going on in our fisheries. Once they get enough data on any one lake to say any rig may be detrimental to it, many others lakes may be deciminated by it. Tournament fishing is only a small fraction of the pressure any given lake is subject to. We have many regulations that we must follow while competing in tournaments, one of them being catch and release. If one is pleasure fishing you may keep your legal limit. Once that limit is removed from a fishery it will not be replenished for a long time. Common sense will tell you that if we do not regulate what we can “within reason” there is no sense in any regulations what so ever. Just pound the legal fish till theyre gone then sit and wonder what the heck just happened to them. Im not saying to ban the rig just put it back on a little more level playing field. All of the other lures mentioned above are a single lure used at one time, these umbrella rigs allow the use of five at one time. A Basscat boat to any other brand of boat is not a disadvantage to the fish just the other angler(the poor sap). I have yet to find a Baitcasting reel that will not backlash. Again these high tech reels are not what is in question for the useage of multiple lures at a given time, but rather they help keep a lot of tangled fishing line out of our fisheries from those anglers that are not as skilled using this type of reel.BrianBrianHAWG Hunter2013 BassCat Eyra2013 Mercury 250 Pro XS Gen2 L/U
Guys its a new gadget for now a couple of years from now there will be something new its something new the bass have not seen until this year this will work good for Crappie, White Bass , How many do you want they are easy to build the head really doesnt matter or the length, I am building some for Tennessee they are three wire , the ones I build may weight 1/4 oz they are built compleaty different with different componets.
First, good job Jigger. I do not fish tournaments anymore but am well aware of how competitive they are and even more “dog eat dog” so to speak. And, I have never thrown an Alabama rig, Tennessee rig, umbrella rig either.I dont think some people are worried about how many they can get or what price…I think some have a certain point they wont cross(yet). At what point does it go overboard? In the last 10 years weve now gotten Side Imaging, Down Imaging, sound mimicking with hydrowaves and now grappling hooks basically.Lets see……..yep, a nice school about 100 feet out, suspended over the brushtop(SI). Shad ball close by(SI/DI). Kick the hydrowave on a particular sound…launch my grappling hook(er, A/T rig or whatever name someone comes up with) and them bass are MINE!I suppose its fun and I wont say I will never throw one, but like I said, I dont fish tourneys so to me………Sometimes its about the fish, sometimes, its about the fishing…………96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
The “poodle rig” is a lot of work, and not magic like some believe, as is the Hydrowave. You still have to find the right fish, and use the right tool to catch them. Personally, Im gonna use whatever tools available, legally, to try to weigh a limit . Jmho,. If made illegal,,,,,,, then Ill throw my jigs more. I like them more anyway. D
