I am sure this has been discussed before but I am wondering what is the difference between a Optimax and a Optimax pro xs in a 200 hp motor I have been told they dont change anything until 225 if so is there any reason to want a pro xs over the regular Optimax because I hear the pro xs is a better motor but if they are the same that would expand my boat preference I am looking at Panteras had to sale mine so my wife could finish nursing school now she is done so I want another one.
While some here have said there are differences, we are not actually aware of a part number different on the engines. From our perspective they are the same engine.
I was told a couple of years ago the reeds are different, not sure if there is anything else.Dan
The Pro XS would be the better motor on a bass boat because it has a 20″ shaft vs the 25″ shaft thats on the standard OptiMax. Besides, OptiMax Pro XS sounds better than just OptiMax.
Last I knew the 200 Optimax and ProXS were identical motors other than labeling. At least they were in 2012. Those are the exact words Merc told me.
Thats my understanding too, same motor. Not sure about others but I like mine without all the extra decals. Just big and black with Mercury on the side. Looks better to me. Sometimes less is more.
So what you are saying is they charge $700 to $800 more for the extra on the decal, and they owned up to it? How did they justify the extra cost? I had a Merc mechanic that told me the reeds were carbon fiber. That bit of info stuck I dont remember what else he said.DanGRR884 wrote:Last I knew the 200 Optimax and ProXS were identical motors other than labeling. At least they were in 2012. The price did not change from standard 200 Optimax to a 200 Pro XS, they were exactly the same price.
Here are some of the differences as listed by Mercury:Mercury MarineIMPROVED DURABILITY AND RESPONSEOnly OptiMax Pro XS features Carbon Fiber Reeds to control airflow into the engine crankcase. Carbon fiber reeds produce improved performance and efficiency because they are more durable and responsive than stainless steel or other fiber materials.MORE HORSEPOWERThe Pro XS offers a Higher Wide-Open-Throttle RPM Operating Range, giving you more propeller options to maximize the performance of your boat.TOUGHER GEARCASEThe durable Torque Master Gearcase (225/250 Pro XS) features a heavy-duty propshaft and Mercury-patented dual water pickups on the front end of the torpedo for a constant flow of cooling water. The asymmetrical skeg delivers superior handling by countering the torque created by prop rotation.PRECISE HIGH-SPEED HANDLINGControlled handling at all speeds is essential, so we outfitted the 250 Pro XS with Solid Billet Aluminum Mounts to keep the engine from turning or twisting under high torque (20-inch models only).EXCELLENT EFFICIENCYExclusive Dome-Shaped Pistons efficiently direct the fuel/air charge to the spark plug, producing excellent running quality, fuel economy and low emissions.I was told factory tune is different also allowing 4% to 6% more HP. Maybe they make 2 identical motors with only a decal change but I doubt it. Dealing with a repower on a 150HP there was a price difference, maybe the decals are more expensive. Dan
These do not apply to 200 Pro XS engines.
