Is anyone using Berkley 100% Flourocarbon and how do you like it compared to the others. I have used a half dozen other brands and cannot find a flourocarbon that casts well or doesnt break. I am currently using Seagar InvisX and hate the way it casts on baitcasters. I dont like the amount of stretch in this line either. I have used P-Line, Stren, Berkley Vanish and regular Seagar with the same results as above. Tony
Tony Youre going to get a number of different replies on this one. P-Line has been my choice for many years (about 4 years now) and you cant beat it for strength, abrasion resistance, or castability. Ive almost gone to 100% flourocarbon except with techniques that require braid or with topwaters. Youre not the only one that has problems casting with it, but its not the line as all true flourocarbons are stiff. The stiffness wont allow it to lie on the spool as smooth as regular monofilaments. Im not sure why youre breaking off. I can understand breaking off with Vanish, but not P-Line or Seagar. Good luck and hope you find what you want. By the way, P-Line Halo is a new flourocarbon line that P-Line offers and it casts a hair bit better than P-Line Flourocarbon. You might try it.
Recommend obtaining a simple hand scale and do some testing…I broke off some fish this spring that I couldnt explain, no brush, open water, fairly light action rod, drag ok. So I did some testing, fluro to me is highly suspect. You might be surprised at the break point of some of your lines. Set up a system that gives you a good anchor point on both ends with a good knot. I trashed a bunch of lines that were “Highly recommended”. Remember this is not very scientific, but you have to have confidence in your equipment. With fluro a couple things were quickly evident, knots must be perfect, any kinks or direct connect to braid in some knots seems to “cut” the fluro. I now use the J knot (surgeons triple knot?) with braid to leader. P line is my choice for a leader. Will use up my Cabelas and Stren Fluro, the rest went in the trash. Mono, I use Trilene XL (my preference for limp, castability and test strength). I actually prefer McCoys, but kinda hard for me to get and I seem to have to re-spool more often that XL, again my choice. Silver Thread and Basspro XPS seem to be pretty good mono, jury still out. Guess the point is, dont take anyones word, do your own testing, when you set hard, you better have confidence that the line holds at the stated 12 pound test not actually breaking at 6. In the last few months , I have lost a lot of faith in line I have use for years. Back in the search mode and open to suggestions.
Tony, I use Vicious. I previously used Seaguar, until Jeff Reynolds gave me a spool of Vicious.Last edited by Jewalston on April 17th, 2008, 6:06 am, edited 1 time in total.James
I love the Berkely Flouro. Its great line. I had always used either seaguar or Gamma. I had been thinking for the last couple of years that Gamma was the best flouro made until this Berkely line came along. I think it is every bit as good and a little cheaper. It has good strength, abrasion resistance isnt bad, and its fairly good casting. Overall its got he best of all of the attributes. I know Bass and Walleye Boats magazine did a test several months back on a group of flourocarbon lines. If you can find that old issue it may help you out some.
Ive been using the Seaguar for a couple years now, with good results. But, most of what i throw is the 20lb flouro, not the lighter weights. all in all i really like the Seaguar, D.
Fishing partner works at a tackle store and he threw seagar forever and he is now all over the Berkley and says it is much better. He could throw whatever he wants and he is using the new Berkley. I will be trying it this weekend, but he claimed it is easier to handle than seagar. Dunno, but he loves it. I will let you know next weekend.
SON HAS BEEN USING P-LINE WITH NO PROBLEMS CASTING OR BREAKING.IT CAME FROM MR ADDISON..NOW I JUST SPOOLED UP SEAGAR ON 2 OF MY REELS AND WILL TRY THIS WEEKEND….I DONT FILL THE REELS AS MUCH AS MONO TO AVOID BACKLASH… SINCERELY A FAT REAR END……ACCORDING TO MR ADDISON…
Vanish – It breaks way to easy for my liking. Probably need to fish it different. Soft tip rod w/ soft-sweeping hookset. A buddie of mine is sponsered by Berkley – so I get a lot of line. I wont use the stuff anymore… Tim
I use Seaguar for just about everything now. Never had had a problem with it breaking, but I dont throw anything under 12# test either. Now if you are talking the new Seaguar InvisX, that is whole different story. I have tried it a few different times and will not use it again. Breaks way too easy!Jason Desertdweller.com Get Your Bass in the Boat!
