Looking for a new GPS/fishfinder for my console and trying to stay under $650. Mostly looking for a simple to operate GPS with good map of local water ( South LA, Atchafalaya Spillway, Lake Verret, Toledo Bend, etc), and a fairly nice fishfinder would be a plus. Thinking the HDS5 may be a bit more high tech, but the 7″ screen on the Elite 7 would be easier to read. Not getting any younger you know. Are there any pros or cons that could lead me to choose one over the other?

Try BOE Marine. You can get 100.00 rebate on an HDS-5 insight with 50/200khz transducer. Would cost less than the 5 w/o a transducer.

Note the Elite7 is about 3″ wider so I dont know if it would fit in your console. I have 2005 puma and need to measure if it would squeeze it in but top of console or ram mount would work. Try BBG Marine 638$ combo HDI w xdcr etc.I have been looking to upgrade my LMS480 (Console) and Eagle Fishmark 320 (Bow). I believe the Elite 7 HDI sports HDS resolution and Downscan capability. It has NMEA which allows waypoint transferability to HDS. Plus the Elite7 allow 3 screen panels which is pretty good and is noticably larger than the HDS 5.I will be seriously looking at Elite7 on bow since I hear Structure Scan on troller is a question mark. Then look at the 9″ Touch with Ram mount at console in a year or two when other priorities subside..(ie furnituture, paint for the boss )HDS8 everywhere would be nice but has anyone chosen the Elite 7 HDI on the bow with HDS at console? Have been running Elite 7 HDI for a couple of months very pleased nice screen size, mounted on top of console on my Pantera ll, thinking about putting another on the bow,or maybe a HDS-5.

Wound up with an HDS 7. Really wanted a larger screen and was leary of the micro card slot and base map on the elite 7. Not enough detail of the canals in the Atchafalaya Spillway. I was told I could copy an SD card to a PC, then back to a micro card, but was not sure. Opted for the 83/200 transom mount transducer. Is there a proven location for mounting to the hull of a 1995 PII? Had a redo on the shoot through transducer on my vexilar ( thank goodness it was only siliconed), and I only want to do this once.
