I have a 2010 puma ftd, 250 pro xs, 26P Fury with all 3 plugs out, and with 8″ manual jack plate. Been driving it 3 weekends now and feel like playing with the set up some.I have been reading past post about set up and still a little confused so I want to make sure Im going in the right direction. Im not sure where the jack plate is set but it is where it came from the factory. I understand it is low because BassCats like the motor low. With 400 lbs of fisherman, near full fuel tanks, and a full live well the hole shot is fairly long 7+ seconds.I want to help this hole shot some. I read that raising the plate some will help in speed and chine walking. I also saw that raising it will help hole shot. Is that correct? What is the draw back of raising the plate? I should raise it 1/4″ at a time but up to what point? What will happen if I raise it too much – as in what will I see in performance changes? Is this the best approach or just go to a 25P prop? Can you give a step by step summary procedure for getting the best performance?I say best performance because the boat drives awesome as is. Just would like to reduce the hole shot some. Thanks
I want to add that the pleasure boaters….I mean ships…were out in full force. Waves 3-4 coming every which-a-way. Boat handled them great and prop never came out of the water (if that tells you more about setup).I also want to say I meant 400 lbs of fishermen – not fisherman. Two of us, not just me.
With livewells that is not terribly bad if you can still get RPMs out of it on top. That is our first question. Next do you have any steering torque on the top end running or is the steering loose when you are stretched out. If you are loose on the wheel running at top end, then you can start raising it 1/4″ at a time till you get torque, then drop it down 1/4″ to get bite again and just to a point of slight steering wheel torque. BCB
The wheel is free at top end. I know to keep an eye on water pressure. What should that pressure range be at?When tightening the jack plate should I just tighten the nuts as much as I can or use a torque wrench?
bass1958,You should have a little steering wheel pressure on top, just slightly when running full out. Water pressure will not be a concern on a Pro XS engine with the front gear case inlets. They will allow plenty of water pressure under most ever scenario you will have. The 1/2″ (3/4″ head) side bolts should just tension up solidly and there is not a torque range we use. If one is distributed by R & R we are not aware of it. Just snug them up good you should be fine. We run them a little loose to make short runs on set up of a couple of miles and check them when we stop to adjust. Then we tension them up on the water when we think we are done. It is really simple and does not take but a few water runs and 10 – 30 minutes overall. Just tether your tools so you dont deep six them when you lean over the transom. BCB
Ive looked overthe jack plate and it seems easy enough to adjust. It looks kind of low. Have you ever tried those hole shot plates like this?http://www.candomarineparts.com/HoleShotPlate.html
They are not necessary. BCB
Can you tell me what size wrench I need to adjust the travel bolt?I have to keep my boat in storage so its not readily available to me to see until I pick it up early sat morning and I want to make sure I have the correct tools if I have to buy one.
I keep a 6-8in cresent wrench in the boat…….just in case. Works well for lots of things including jackplate. Get a rubber coated handle to keep from scratching the boat.
Your travel bolt is going to be the same size as your prop nut. I am miles away from my boat right now but I think its 1-1/4″. I use my prop wrench to adjust the travel nut. I am running the same setup at you are 2010 Puma FTD 250 ProXS, 26P Fury. Every boat and set up is going to be slightly different because of load. The first thing you need to do is get your top end set up. As stated by Bass Cat you want slight wheel torque at WOT. You should be between 5800-6000 RPM and not shooting a rooster tail any higher then your cowling. Once you have your top end set up you can mess with your hole shot. You should only go down a size in prop if you are not getting the RPMs at WOT. Going down a size in prop will give you a better hole shot but you will also see a 200-250 RPM increase at topend.Start with that and update us as you make progress. BCB – I have been out of the net for a while so please correct me if I am wrong.
