My 05 puma with 225 evinrude. As some of you know its my first boat and trying to figure out the trim. with two guys had it to 70 couple of times. Funny thing is at say trim at half way mark at about 50 the rpm gaure usually shows 5k. However sometimes it seems to bounce around a bit. Is this normal? And where should i be trimming this thing for max performance. thnx guys. Tommy
You should not use all of the trim and have a few bumps down to make it run the best. If you trim it all the way up the hull kites and starts pressing air. As for the tach fluctuation, who knows. That would be up to a technician or a new tach to figure out.

I found that with most reasonable height settings I got the best speed with engine at full max trim, but that it tends to chine walk or oscilate (doesnt feel like a true chine walk) depending on water conditions. However, if I gave it a bump down as you suggest that it runs really steady and shaves about 1 to 1.5 MPH off the top speed. The one thing I found interesting was that this seems to be the case regardless of the load and the top speed for that load. That it is actually kiting or trying to act like a sail explains it pretty well. Believe it or not I ran into something similar with my Baker Custom tunnel hull with lower engine heights and max trim, which was designed to kite over air pockets. LOL. I never really thought to compare the two until now, but it makes sense. With the tunnel the oscilation was much more violent (and dangerous) and the frequency was much faster which was probably why I never equated the two affects until now. I wish I had read about air pocketing or kiting with the BCB hull a lot sooner. When you guys mean max height what exactly are we talking bout. I tend to run mine if you were looking at the gauge on the middle or a hair above the second line meaning i only have three (all they way at the bottom middle and top). To add to the original post as well i think the tac is acting up if you had a jump or loss of 500 to 800 rpms i would think you would notice it and the motor never skips a beat. `
This is interesting. I have been running boats since before they had trim gauges. I seldom look at the gauge today and just trim until it “feels right”. If I trim it too high, it starts to bog down a little. I know it is just a touch from full trim. I think I will start looking at the gauge and see if I can duplicate what Bob is tallking about. It is a different feel on my older PII than the newer boats I have driven recently, especially the PIV. LOZman
The P4 has a more generic characteristic and you can trim that hull almost all the way and in some cases gain. It rear lifts and bow drives more.
Just me, but I hardley look at my trim unless Im in bad water. Most driving is by what I feel in the seat she will tell you what she wants. I have a hydraulic jack plate and almost everytime out there is a littlebit of adjustment I make to it, and the trim is always moving. Like BCB and Phil says seat time is the best teacher.
