I did my top speed so far today = 78.2 gps. 2010 Puma FTD 250 pro xs 26 Fury. Just me, all my fishing gear, no livewell water and 1/2 tank of gas. Ive had the boat for 8 months so still pretty new to this speed thing. It was perfect conditions – no traffic and slight chop on water. It started walking a little but not too bad. It was at 5850 rpm so had a little more to go. I guess I could have trimmed up some more to get more rpms and speed. I had it trimmed up to +4 on the gauge but what I did today was all I felt comfortable with for now. (I was sure to trim down instead of letting off the throttle when slowing down.) Ive always heard it will go faster if the nose is pointing straight instead of too high. It sure felt like the nose was high but maybe that is just me getting use to it. Im not sure if this is telling me to lower or raise the engine on the jackplate any or if its set right and I just need more practice?
Gotta be a rush. I am gonna be in your shoes in two weeks. I too will be new to the speed of a performance ride. My Cougar FTD will be ready in two weeks. I cant wait. Look forward to hearing more about your progress to help me with mine.
bass1958, that answer would take a more experienced hand to tell you and some room to stretch it out. Take your time and learn a little more before you start tweaking it.
I posted the same kind of numbers last weekend in a bass tournament. Just myself and all tournament load, full tanks, no full livewells. Was steady climbing but last I looked down before cutting off the main lake into a creek was 78.4. I have the same setup as far as motor and prop. These things will fly!!!! and they feel safe when doing so. I am a big fella at 62 270lbs. So I know I was rolling!! The first bit of advice I can give is dont try to fight it too much. Meaning, I was so worried at first about chine walk that every little bow shift or roll from waves made me jerk and move the wheel. The movements kept me thinking I was walking and not wanting it to get loose. I have learned this is not the case and now alot more relaxed and have yet now to get this puppy to chine or bounce uncontrollably. I also remember the one thing that Ivan told me and Rick reitterated was to control everything basically with the trim and not just cut the throttle. Seat time continues to make all of the difference in the world to me as it will you. This is the absolute most sound, fastest, more fun to drive, and excellent fishing platform that I have ever had. I myself am a Cat Owner for life. Good Luck
Put a 27 Fury on there and it will push it over 80. My first runs in my new boat a few days ago were on the limiter with the Fury consistently at 80.5. I h by no means have this boat dialed in yet – we spent more time playing with my buddys new Eyra but I feel pretty confident I can get another mph out of it. I also was shocked at how different the FTD drives compared to my old Puma (not an FTD), This boat had a tendency to kite more and had a few more squirrels running around in the hull but was definately faster. As far as me being on the limter Im trying to figure out which prop to try next. Any thoughts? I just sold a 28 trophy before I picked this one up and Im kicking myself now for not trying it before I sold it.
Its gonna get hot soon Youll have water and fish Cotton. Keep the 27 fury and move on.C.O.D. Jr. III
Im gonna keep the 27 on it for sure but I got a brand new 26 Fury I can get rid of and get another prop to have a spare. The 27 will be perfect during the summer but Im looking for something to run in cool temps that will stretch it out.
Yamaha 27T-1 or Solas scorpion 27. Virtually same prop with monster ears on its 15&1/4″ dia. It holds water well when its rough and never stops pulling. The larger diameter gives better lift. Its been my favorite so far.
